waiting for lock on /var/tmp/portage [Solved]

When I run 'revdep-rebuild -X' I get this error:

waiting for lock on /var/tmp/portage/.dev-util.portage_lockfile

If I 'nano waiting for lock on /var/tmp/portage/.dev-util.portage_lockfile'
I get an empty file. How to fix???

Not exactly your issue, but awfully close, and probably worth a shot, substituting the filename your installation is complaining about, of course.

Thanks, I considered removing the offending file but was afraid it would break something. So I read [again] the Package management sections of the Sabayon and Gentoo wiki's. Then read [again] about 40 pages each in the Sabayon and Gentoo forums. Found nothing, swallowed my fear,GULP, and rebooted. AND IT WORKED. No clue as to why but stopping and rebooting in the middle of running 'revdep-rebuild -X' with 61 packages to emerge made me extremely nervous. Nonetheless it worked. Thanks for the tip flick. I'll use that in the future.
