sabayon hangs after x starts

Postby lucidardor » Fri Jun 29, 2007 20:28

It hangs right after x starts and the splash screen comes up that says "when art meets inspiration." The pinwheel spins and it just hangs. I can ctrl/alt/F3 back to verbose, remove the temp file and start x via typing "startx" then launching a gnome-session from the twm x terminal, and I can kill twm and get metacity running for a default gnome-session logged in as root. I can't even make it to the login screen and I can't run beryl because "there are no composite extensions." Also, it seems AIGLX is the default x server, but I have an ATI card so I think the underlying issue is related to that. I tried installing 3.3 and had the same problem. I'm currently running 3.4 loop 3. I had 3.2 64 bit installed at which point and it ran fine, but any attempt to install a 32 bit version of any of the later releases has the same issue. Since I can get gnome running in an ugly way, it seems it installed correctly. Any ideas would be great. PS I searched the forums for a similar problem and couldn't find anything. Sorry if this bug has been addressed somewhere else. Any help would be appreciated.

Next time use " ctrl+alt+backspace " to restart the x-server and likely it will go past the lockup. Does this only on mac mini intel for me but not on dell e1705 no screen laptop with same video card / specs.

What you can do is boot with the " nox " option added to the end of the boot code.

This will take you to the root text only login , then login and run " xorgconfig "
Following it close to your card type and or vesa generic " 0 " zero video driver number let it finish and write to xorg.conf.

The idea is to just get x working and after install to fix the video driver.

Then still as root in text login run " startkde " or " startx "

Not sure here if it will end up only as root kde x or as a user or have a login on kde ?

Either way you can then using kde browse to the /home/sabayonuser/Desktop and run the installer thingy / doule click as it might not be on the root kde desktop.

This is a redneck way but for the time being it wroks and gets the job done.

Solution in future:
Fix might be to figure out once sab is up and running / installed and booted what driver it needs and likes / 100% working with and then next time you have to install force the live dvd boot option to boot / load the ?? " doload=nvidia " replacing the nvidia with the actual one that works for you.

Seems that the driver is close to good but some fancy feature is blocking it from properly loading .

Nvidia has 9755 for 6000 or higher model number cards and 96xx for geforce mx440 or similar non 6000 or lower andcan work for higher number cards.

Might be similar for your video card.

Hope this helps.
