Problem with Sabayon 3.3 and Realtek 8168 NIC.

Postby Jonte_77 » Fri Mar 23, 2007 10:50

I'm having serious problems getting my nic to function in sabayon 3.3. It's a common build-in notebook interface: Realtek RTL8168.

I've been running gentoo on the notebook for about a year using Realteks drivers, the r1000 module. Since kernell 2.6.18-ish support for the r8168 was added to the kernel through the r8169 driver.

The problem is that I can't get interface to work at all in Sabayon! Booting the 3.3 livecd the nic is detected and the module loaded, but it doesn't work, no ip address is recieved. Same thing with the 3.2 mini-version.

ethtool eth0 shows that no link is detected!

I figured I'd try with the regular 2.6.20 gentoo-sources and compiled the r8169 as a module, same result.
I tried the 2.6.21-r4 vanilla sources, same result.
I tried the 2.8.18 gentoo source, which I'm fairly sure worked in gentoo, same result.
I tried compiling both the 2.6.18 gentoo and 2.6.20 sabayon sources without the r8169 module, and compiling the r1000 module from the Realtek drivers. It still doesn't work, but I get link detected from ethtool, but speed unknown and duplex unknown.

Ifconfig has never show a single recieved package on the interface, only sent packages.
The interface works in windows, and has worked in gentoo before.

Please help! I'm all out of ideas! :)

Ok thanks! Did you have to do anything, or did it work straight off the live-cd?

Did you get you R8168B to work ? I am having the same problem on a GA-P35 board and I am interested in any solution you found.

download latest file from Realtek8168
follow instructions
reboot computer

now working in 3.4e as I type :)

great thing about gentoo/sabayon
99% of downloaded files compile and work (even without an ebuild
