how to print to a windows pc over home network

Postby dkarlmt » Mon Jun 25, 2007 0:32

I just recently had to reinstall SL and I am trying to connect to my printer that is hardwired to a windows pc. I know I have to set it up as a Samba network connection and when I click Test at the end it is asking me for a username and password.

I know I had this working before I had to reinstall, but I have no idea what the username or password are. The windows pc doesn't have any login info so is there a way to bypass this, or does anyone have any suggestions?

What model is your printer? I need a brand, name and number. I.E A Lexmark X70.

Also if your Windows computer has any administrator passwords and usernames. Try that.

win $vista request passwords
if you use it, you have to disable the pass request

in order to create a working share in win2k or winXP you must have a user/password.

all windows computers have user names, but most sadly do not have passwords.

start, settings, control panel, user accounts.

click on:

Change the way users log on or off

uncheck BOTH boxes.

then go into your user account, or administrator what ever you use to log into the computer with and create a password.

reboot the windows computer log in at the prompt with your user/password combo, then create your share. at that point it should work better for you. you will still be prompted the 1st time you connect to the printer, but after that you should never have to login again.

It is possible to print to a printer connected to a networked Windows PC without needing to know the Samba password of the Windows PC. This is how I did it for the HP PSC 2110 printer connected directly via USB to my tower PC running Windows XP Home on my home network:

On my laptop running SL 3.4 Loop 2b, I used the CUPS Print Manager to 'Add Printer'. When prompted for the Device I selected 'Windows Printer via SAMBA'. When prompted for the 'Device URI' I entered:

smb:///<name of the Windows PC>/<printer's name>

which in my case is:

smb:///Performa5105/Printer2

(Yes, that's three forward slashes.)

You can find out the Windows PC's name and Windows Workgroup name by looking on the Windows PC under Control Panel > System > Computer Name. You can find out the printer name by looking on the Windows PC under Control Panel > Printers & Faxes, right-click on the relevant printer, select Properties in the pull-down menu and then click on the Sharing tab and look at the name in the 'Share name' field.

As the printer connected to the Windows PC is an HP PSC 2110 in my case, I selected Model/Driver of 'HP PSC 2110 Foomatic/hpijs (en)' from the list. CUPS Printer Manager lets you print a test page. If during this set-up procedure you are prompted for a username and password, it is looking for your SL root details, viz. "root" as username and <your root password> as password.

Works perfectly for me.

EDIT: I've not tried using the GNOME printer manager under SL, but you could probably set up the remote printer via that instead without needing a Samba password for the remote Windows PC either, as I've done it on a different PC running Ubuntu on my home network and it worked too. This is how I configured my Ubuntu PC to print on the printer connected to my Windows PC:

I selected 'Windows Printer (SMB)', and 'driver hpijs (recommended) - HPLIP 0.9.7 (Suggested)'

For 'Host' I entered the Windows Workgroup name instead of the host PC, so I entered "MSHOME" (without the quotes) as that's the name of my Windows Workgroup.

For 'Printer' I entered "guest@Performa5105/Printer2" (without the quotes) as my Windows tower PC is named "Performa5105" and the printer connected to it is named "Printer2".

I would imagine the GNOME Printer Manager in SL would let you do the same thing (K Menu > Applications > Settings > GNOME Settings > Printing).
