Video display resolutions and aspect ratios...

Postby comedyaddict » Thu Jun 14, 2007 4:26

Hi Everyone!

First off I have to say that I've been really impressed with Sabayon so far. Everything just works from what I've been able to tell, except one thing. The thing is that I cannot set my video resolution higher then 1024*768. I've tried a number of linux distros where I could not even install them since my 256mb Ati x700 pro card just didn't work for the install process.

My questions are as follows:

1) How do I tell what graphics card is meant to be installed in the system? I'm gathering that its not my ATI one...

2) After a little research I found out about the ATI Proprietary Linux drivers. Has anyone install these successfully? Or do I not need them?

Thanks Heaps.. Brian

BTW, I have the current version of the OS if that helps...

The ati-drivers should already be there

/etc/X11/xorg.conf <-- for all your resolution settings

Personally, I am on nVidia and I have to use the boot-options when I install.

I use - [ res=1280x800 refresh=60 opengl=nvidia ]

You could throw in a statement for you keymap if you need that.

This is what I use for my Notebook - pick your own resolution and exchange "nvidia" for "ati".

Note - look up the supported resolutions and only use one of those that you can live with. As an example, I couldn't use 1280x900 because the installation doesn't support that. The effect on my notebook would be that I'd get 1024x768.

I have an ATI x700 chip with 128 dedicated RAM on my Laptop. On this machine, sabayon is the first distro that booted without any problems - resolution 1680x1050 :D ... which is also why I'm sticking to it.(tried various distro since the mid 90's and always gave up after a few weeks)

I know this is not an answer to your problem, but I guess it shows that the chip alone is not the problem...or does the "pro" have something to do with it?

My laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 and even with the latest fglrx drivers as installed with SL 3.26, then SL 3.3 and now 3.4 loop 2b, hardware acceleration is a no-no: no DRI, no XGL (and no AIGLX).

And with SL 3.4 Loop 2b only one resolution (the maximum detected, viz. 1680 x 1050 for my laptop) is available in Control Centre > Peripherals > Display Screen size. It does not matter what I do with xorg.conf, only one screen size is available. So I need to have to have two versions of xorg.conf: one when I'm using my laptop by itself and another when I'm using it with and external monitor. With SL 3.26 and 3.3 I just needed to adjust the screen size from the Control Centre.

Seems ATI is not SL-friendly.
