Beryl crashing

Postby beave » Tue Jun 12, 2007 10:29

Hi All,

First of all great distro. I've always had windows and for the past year ran Ubuntu, but i think i'll totally switch :)

I had Beryl running from the LiveDVD (3.3) fine. I fell in love with Beryl straight away. After installing sabayon 3.3, Beryl worked until i restarted. I had tried to install vmware and tinker with the Beryl settings a bit. I didn't know if i screwed something up so i just ran a fresh install.

The problem has come back after restarting, the only thing i did this time was install vmware - couldn't configure vmware so still not working. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, i just thought i'd fill you in with some background info.

I've tried the suggestion from this thread: http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewt ... 7b4d70dc46

I've copied over my xorg.conf file from the liveDVD as suggested. I've ran accel-manager - selected aigxl (nvidia graphics using drivers that came with sabayon)

When i run bery-manager the error returned is:
Code: Select all
XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia Present
Relaunching beryl with __GL_YIELD="NOTHING"
XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia Present
beryl: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
beryl: No manageable screens found on display :0

The interface for the GUI Beryl Manager is different from when it was working and it says 0.1.4 - I'm sure i was running a different version when it was working.

So basically help!

thanks for the reply wolfden, but no such luck.

Code: Select all
localhost davidk # killall beryl-manager
localhost davidk # beryl --replace
XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia Present
Relaunching beryl with __GL_YIELD="NOTHING"
XGL Absent, checking for NVIDIA
Nvidia Present
beryl: Another window manager is already running on screen: 0
beryl: No manageable screens found on display :0

I still get 0.1.4 beryl manager when i run beryl-manager again.

I've run emerge --sync && layman -S && emerge portage and it says everything is up to date. Should i just try to download from beyrl.org and update (or reinstall) 0.2.0?

I know. I dont know how i got it. I just installed Sabayon off the DVD :?

That's why i added:

I've run emerge --sync && layman -S && emerge portage and it says everything is up to date.

I might do another fresh install and note exactly what changes i do.

Yes, but did you upgrade beryl with emerge -ua beryl? Try upgrading Beryl first, 0.1.4 is indeed a very old version...

thanks Heautontimoroumenos, but i've just re-installed.

I'm still having it crash but it's totally different now.

1. All i did this time was try to install vmware - as posted on the How to guide.
2. I was getting black windows (see below for further info) so i tried to upgrade my graphics driver, as posted in the how to
3. i restarted X and then received the error below

(I didnt write down these steps they're just from memory so could be wrong)

Now if i press ok, it seems to go in a loop of loading itself then crashing and so on. If i dont click ok, and launch beryl as the manager then the window frames dont show, but i've got all the keyboard shortcuts. If i then reload windows decorater then it all works.

But when i have more then two windows open that are greater then 800 x 600 then they just show as black. If i minimise the windows then maximise them, then i can see them again.

I am using an integrated Geforce 6100 graphics card. I might just buy a new graphics card to see if this will over come the problem. It seems that my situation is very unique

Postby reuben » Mon Jun 18, 2007 7:11

I wonder why my Desktop Acceleration doesn't work even after clicking on "desktop acceleration". Help needed.
