Nvidia Drivers / Sound issues (F3jm Notebook)

Postby xephrey » Sun Jun 10, 2007 8:28

Hey ya'll! I'm a new comer to Sabayon - just got out of the Ubuntu world after medling around with it for a while. So, I'm used to a more apt-get environment. Although I did run Kubuntu, so while the GUI is identical... I have no idea how to do anything anymore. There is intuitive way to update anything or install anything. So, I need some major help. I really liked the idea of Sabayon coming with Beryl already installed, thats what kinda roped me into this whole thing in the first place. But yeah - a few questions:

On my ASUS F3jm laptop, I would like to:

--Get my webcam working (this has proven to be the hardest thing linux has ever faced, after weeks of tweaking and compiling drivers in Ubuntu, I still didnt get it working. I got close, but never fully functional)

--get the sound working

--install nvidia drivers (I know that there are drivers installed enough to run Beryl... but not enough for me to choose the maximum resolution that my screen is capeable of)

--find a way to install the apt-get way of doing things so that I can function in this OS

--Find the best version of Cedega for Sabayon (I already have a paid subscription, but I dont know if Sabayon is just considered Debian or... what)

Now lets see if Sabayon's homepage forums are as responsive as Beryl-Project's forums, or if they are as dead as Cedega's forums. =)

Any help would be MUCH appreciated
THANK YOU!

Hi, welcome to sabayon :)

1) What's the make of your webcam? The output of the lspci command might tell you this.

2) "get the sound working" doesn't really tell us anything :? What is the make of your sound adapter? Again, lspci might help.

3) I thought the nvidia-drivers where the latest, if not then try to open a root konsole and type "emerge nvidia-drivers" and see if installs a later one. What nvidia graphics card have you got? I expect it's more to do with your xorg.conf file as to why your not getting the right resolution. Look at the link at the bottom of this page for more info.

4) apt-get in sabayon  This is a gentoo based distro. Everything is compiled from source via portage. Again, follow link at the bottom of page.

5) Latest version of cedega is version 6. Have you read this link: http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6207
Searching the sabayon forums is always a good start

Ok links,
setting up resolution (xorg.conf): http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=83973
Even though this on ubuntu forum it seems a good explanation. Just remember you are using xdm/kdm and not gdm like in ubuntu.

portage and emerge: http://www.sabayonlinux.org/wiki/index. ... tage_Guide

There's quite good info on the sabayon wiki page and gentoo wiki page. In fact, gentoo is one of the best documented distro there is so you shouldn't get stuck for reading stuff

Forget apt-get. Learn portage. Once you've learnt it you'll find it's a lot more powerful than deb or rpm package managers .
However, because everything is compiled from source it takes longer than apt-get where everything is installed from pre-compiled binaries. Sabayon is introducing a way to install pre-compiled binaries in one of it's newer version so you shouldn't have too long to wait if you get fed up of compiling everything from source.

Good luck and all the best

Alright, the learning process begins. This is kinda fun! Although its a bit more geared towards programers than Ubuntu was... so I might struggle a bit more. But thats alright!

The webcam is manufactured by D-MAX, Syntek STK-1135 (ASUS WebCam, 1.3M, USB 2.0, FF)

The audio driver says its a Realtek High Definition Audio card. I dont know what else to say about it other than I tried all the available sound settings currently offered in Sabayon in the audio preferences, and none of them seemed to do anything.

I'm not sure what to do about the nvidia drivers. . . I tried updating the drivers, but it says its got the latest, and I believe it, but when I bring up the nvidia-settings window, it offers me no settings to alter. Just an empty window with the classic checkboxes on the right side.

I do have a Cedega subscription - but I forget if they have a version specific to Sabayon or if I should just get the Debian package? I wont worry about that until I have the things mentioned above up and running.

Thanks!

Hi

Yep, because Gentoo/Sabayon is all based on compiling source code it's alot more complicated than Ubuntu. However, if you get to grips with it, and it takes a while, you find your knowledge on Linux becomes ever so more advanced. After 6 months with Sabayon, you'll find your self with enough knowledge to take on most Linux distros out there. It is a steep learning curve but there are plenty of people here to help you out if you're willing to learn :)

I've only been here about 6 months. Was using Mepis 6 before but since using Sabayon, I've never looked back :D

Have a quick read of this link http://www.sabayonlinux.org/forum/viewt ... ght=aptget
I explained to someone before about the differences between portage and apt-get. It's worth a look. It's not too long. The Gentoo forums are always a good place to look as most things there apply here too.

Right, back to business: (open up a konsole and type "su" followed by root password) Don't enter any of the double quotes in any of the following steps and perform each step in a root konsole.

1) First of you got to type the command "layman -S && emerge --sync". This will update the portage tree. I bit like doing an apt-get update.

2) I'll have a quick look and report back about the webcam.

3) About the Nvidia graphics card. What resolution are you supposed to be getting and what are you stuck with?

4) What make is your monitor and what is the maximum resolution and refresh rate?

5) With the sound card. I'm not sure if you can configure it by typing in "alsaconf" ?

6) Can you post the contents of your current /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.

7) Can you post the output of the command "lspci". This will list most of the hardware you got. The command "lsusb" might be useful also as it lists all the usb devices you got.

8) To install Cedega just type "emerge cedega". If you've updated your portage tree like in step 1 it should install Cedega version 6.

All the best

Well, I configured it and set the system to use alsa in sound preferences... no result yet, I dunno if I have to restart or what, but it claims that it was configured successfully. More Details on that later.

Hmm.... things say that sound works fine, yet still... nothing. I saw a guy on this forum with the same problem and he said he got it working with some tweaks. He has the same laptop as I do, so I PMed him. We'll see if any good comes of that.

Getting the resolution you want ought to be simple. Find all the lines in xorg.conf that say:

Code: Select all
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Edit those lines, as root, to say:

Code: Select all
Modes "1280 x 800" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

If you want to try to get 32 bit color depth, you could try adding another subsection that says:

Code: Select all
SubSection "Display"
Depth 32
ViewPort 0 0
Modes "1280 x 800" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubsection

Then change the default color depth to 32 bits:

Code: Select all
DefaultDepth 32

Don't worry about the refresh rate. It does not really matter with LCD's, if I understand correctly. If I were you, I would first change the mode lines to add the desired resolution, then restart. If that works, leave it for a while, then come back later and try to add the desired color depth. Do things one step at a time, and leave time to be sure it works twice in a row, before going on to make the next change. Be sure to make a backup of your xorg.conf file before doing any of this.
