Live DVD Doesn't boot

Postby tll_2k » Tue Jun 05, 2007 7:02

I'm still new to linux, Ive used ubuntu almost exclusively for about 2 weeks, when I saw someone mention Sabayon. I downloaded the DVD, burned it, and booted with no problems into Sabayon in my new Gateway computer, which has ubuntu 7.04 and win XP. I played around for a while and decided that I wanted to install it on my HP a522n, my old desktop.

On the HP, I have Win XP, and Ubuntu. I was having problems getting the ubuntu LiveCD working on it, so I used the alt CD to install. It won't boot int ubuntu! so I tried the Sabayon Live DVD, thinking that ubuntu wasn't detecting something right, and that SL would. It showed the boot menu, and when I chose to boot, it went to a black screen. So I looked around and can get the splash screen to load with acpi=off. Now, it freezes up on:

Code: Select all
Letting udev process events...
[105.155172] udevd-event[4858]: run_program: '/lib/udev/udev_run_devd' abnormal exit
INIT: PANIC: application violation at 0xfffe420! sleeping for 30 seconds.

I waited, much longer than 30 seconds, and nothing happened. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!
Tyler Lane

P.S. I am an almost complete linux noob, complete gentoo based noob, so please go easy on me and go step by step. Thanks!

Cool we don't flame you for asking a normal question heck we don't flame at all as far as I know.

Not sure what version of Sabayon you have but the 3.4loop2b is still beta and testing and the 3.4 final / gold should be ready by middle june 2007.

This might have the missing parts that causes this problem for you.

3.3 was last official stable release so 3.4 would be as well , even though 3.4loop2b is very stable on my machine.

Fix could be:
You could possibly try the safe boot option but you might have done this already. If it is a bit older machine about p4 equivalent there was a stage that acpi / achi or something to this extend had to be disabled to get it workking , power management either in bios or using cheat codes noacpi.

Not 100% sure but it looks like some hardware is causing the block when this is run.

Also 3.3 mini / cd size could work if you do not want to wait or just wait a few days until ?15 june then 3.4 will be out.

Hope this helps.

ive tried the cheat codes already, or at least:

Code: Select all
noapic nolapic pci=noacpi gentoo=nohdparm nohdparm ide=nodma

None of which have done anything. I...

Fixed it! I was booting up when I came and replied. I had to switch to my onboard video card. But, the question now is, how do I get my Nvidia card to work? also, I have to boot with acpi=off, if I install, How do I make it do that on boot or fix whatever problem is causing me to need that?

Thanks!
Tyler

[edit] Now I have a command prompt... it never loaded the desktop environment. What now?

Code: Select all
noddc res=1024x768 refresh=60 opengl=nvidia

Didn't do anything, with or without the onboard video turned on in the bios. thanks for the idea, though. I noticed that when I got to the terminal prompt, it had detected the Nvidia card just fine, but I can only get there when I have it set to onboard video in the bios...

what is the real difference of using xdriver=nvidia vs opengl=nvidia?

I only ask because in some cases I see people saying to use xdriver=ati and opengl=ati
