Does networkmanager work sith static IP (...yet)?

Postby eduardhc » Tue May 22, 2007 15:52

Hi,
I'd just like to know of current versions of NetworkManager and KNetworkManager works fine with static IP. I mean, I'd like to know if they "honour" somehow the specific request to use a specific IP when connecting to a given network.

I have my system currently working fine in "manual" mode (networkmanager and knetworkmanager are not installed), with customized /etc/conf.d/net and /etc/conf.d/wireless files and added /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 to 'default' runlevel.

Cheers,
Eduard

I switched to dhcp so I don't know, but I do say that your method is still the best way. That is how I always did it in the past and it never failed.

Yes, I know. The problem with the "manual" mode is that, if the wireless router is not powered on at system boot (which occurs sometimes because someone forget it...), then the network is not properly initialized, requiring either a reboot or entering a terminal and doing a 'sudo /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 restart'.

The first option is not usable if MythTV is recording something, and the second is, well..., not very adequate for my wife ;)...

So having kenetworkmanager working (BTW: is there any way to AUTOMATICALLY connect to one of the networks with it...?) would be a step forward, as the GUI is easier to use for the rest of members af my family.

Cheers,
Eduard

PS: anyway, I did some tests yesterday and were not very good. The current version of NetworkManager doesn't seem to work fine with my Wifi adaptor (a ZD1211rw device), and it only properly initializes the adaptor the first time it tries to connect to the wifi network.
