Problem with Desktop Acceleration

Postby surrealmadrid » Fri May 11, 2007 5:09

After having problems installing Sabayon on a 10GB partition, I installed it on another laptop using the whole 80GB drive. However, I'm encountering another problem:

There doesn't seem to be any desktop acceleration. I've tried manual ways of enabling them, but nothing happens. I also tried the "http://www.sabayonlinux.org/wiki/index.php?title=HOWTO:_Get_Ati_or_Nvidia_Video_Cards_working_in_Sabayon" page but I keep getting the operation not permitted error at the modprobe command. The laptop has a Radeon Mobility 9200. I should mention though, that Ive booted off the Live DVD on this laptop and everything worked fine, infact I had the option to choose XGL and AIGLX and in both cases the 3d effects worked fine without any configuration needed. So I'm just curious as to why it hasn't been installed to include all the proper configurations?

Ok So I reinstalled it again, and the 3d Desktop acceleration worked fine........ until I shut down or reboot. After which it stops working and reverts back to the original problem.

I'm quite confused...

I had this same issue, livedvd worked fine, full install would NOT work, even after I enabled the acceleration, and refreshed the video server (I think cntrl +alt+backspace)

I then booted into the acceleration menu and tried the same thing. Nothing. It was like I never did it.

So the answer for me was to re install the package, and for some strange reason, using the same dvd, it worked absolutely perfect and has worked ever since. I really didnt get it.

My acceleration only worked on the first boot after install. All subsequent boots have gone back to acceleration-less mode and nothing seems to bring it back. What should I do? This is quite confusing..

FWIW, I'm having the same problem. It worked on the Live DVD. It worked right after my first install. After that, nothing.

Yes I have to ammend my other post prior, same issue here. Worked fine for first boot, and live dvd, but does not work after reboot, even after manually setting it, and rebooting.

I give up for now Iguess, unless someone has an answer. So far, no one has offered one.

you might give CompComm a try. Its on the xeffects overlay. Its suppose to be the berly/compiz merger. It may not work but give it a try. don't forget to use demerge

Seems like a common problem with SL 3.3. In my case, hardware acceleration worked when using the LiveDVD but not after installing to the HDD. I followed the SL Wiki procedure to try and fix the problem, but this resulted in a black screen and "FATAL" error message on rebooting, so I reinstalled SL to get back to a usable (non-accelerated) SL. Following another procedure posted in a thread in the SL Forum resulted in a corrupted display but at least in that case I managed to type 'blind' and revert to a usable (non-accelerated) SL. So I have given up too in the case of 3.3. But, from what I've read in various posts, 3.4 will fix this problem, so I'm waiting patiently for the release of the finalised 3.4 on 30 June 2007.

I now have three pcs (desktop, re-born server and laptop) all loaded with Sabayon. My main box does not allow me to use Beryl and *appears* to have acceleration turned off. I set a new user for my son and Beryl / acceleration appeared to work. So I set up another user - same deal. Then I checked root and it worked. Other pcs seem to have same some do /some dont. What was also interesting was that each new user I set up appeared to have 'random' icons on the desktop - one even had exactly the same icons as the live installer (which I never seen before - it even had the 'install to disk' icon). Wierd. Also, my main user logon comes up with the old yellow, circular boot icons - which I cannot get the others to do, and has a user number of 1000 not 500+. Is there a link here?

How can you be sure acceleration is working (as opposed to it suggesting that it is not in the acceleration boot option)?
