Anyone read this: GPL requirement could've a chilling effect

Postby konstk » Tue Jun 27, 2006 23:28

Here is some of what it says

"The requirement to supply source code is covered by section 3 of the second version of the GPL."

How would this affect Sabayon x86-64 Linux [notice I used the new name :) ] since it's distributed in binary form?

It should have no effect on Sabayon Linux as we are 100% Pure Gentoo. We do not repackage any packages and use programs that's either in portage or have to grab the source code directly from a maintainer.

That's true and I understand what you mean but my interpretation of the article is that there must be a reference in some way to the source from which Sabayon was built. Probably including the make options too. I didn't see that on the website unless I missed it.

We've always explained that we're based on Gentoo, and its the way you upgrade your system, you use gentoo's emerge/portage system :) I think that should be explaination enough for any contract hunter...I think ;)

Any lawyers, official ones please, that know better and will give advice pro bono may send me an email if otherwise.

I'm pretty sure the only big deal would be if we tried to repackage and forked off the main gentoo line. What we're doing is just taking the minimal gentoo install and building it all the way up for the user already and offering it.

By using "equery list" or by getting the "packages list" available on every RR4/RR64 release notes, you can see what's the portage version of every installed package. With this information, just go to: http://www.gentoo-portage.com, look for it and you'll see:

1. the source code of the package
2. the patches applied to it, if there are ones.

Then we use coffeebuzz Portage overlay, just go to http://www.gentoo-wiki.com and look for it.
