Beryl and Aiglx vanished (solved)

Postby matsujin » Sat Mar 17, 2007 17:12

First of all.. fantastic job devs!! Thanks :)

And my problem: I downloaded 3.3 dvd image, checked md5sum and burned.. Installed it first twice because i forgot scsi emulation and the order of drives was wrong in bios and grub didn't loaded correctly..

I chose aiglx during install. I have 7900GT..

The actual problem: first boot goes well. Things just work :) But when I booted second time without livedvd, beryl did not start. Ok.. tried to run from console and it says that no composite enabled. I enabled the composite and installed new nvidia-drivers and beryl starts, but window decorator does not work... Windows are without borders.. cube spins though :)

Of course I did things between first and second boot, but mainly I was testing mp3's, video, java, flash, torrent, firestarter etc.. I also synced and updated portage (emerge portage.) It's possible that I did something fatal, but for now I have no idea what that could have been.

I'm just about to reinstall sabayon once more.. And then I just boot my machine few times to see what happens.. I'll be back in few hours!

Have you tied to delete beryl´s/emerald´s settings to use fresh configs?

The very same thing happened.. and this time I just installed -> boot -> instant reboot = beryl does not work..

Here's output when i run beryl-manager

**************************************************************
* Beryl system compatiblity check *
**************************************************************

Detected xserver : NVIDIA

Checking Display :0.0 ...

Checking for XComposite extension : failed

No composite extension

Currently we cannot guarantee that Beryl will work correctly with multiple X screens.
Using the --no-context-share command line option can help.
Please report any success to the beryl developer mailing list. The list can be found at lists.beryl-project.org

Ok.. Don't know why it works now but here's what I did:

after the second boot I run acceleration manager (which said that no acceleration was on) and I chose aiglx and then ctrl alt backspace = working for now.

Still wondering why it did what it did.. :(

matsujin: Thank you for that! Great timing too. I just got Sabayon booting from an external hard drive minutes before your post and was disheartened that Beryl didn't show up! Works perfectly now. :D

I just cleared my .emerald and .beryl files, and it still doesn't work. Just defaults back to metacity, any ideas? It was working fine earlier today.

Try to see if

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

is still in xorg.conf. I think nvidia-settings or something else overwrites xorg.conf.

I had exactly the same problem and your advice seems to have sorted it.

Well I was wrong! :( After I reboot I cannot get Beryl OR the standard KDE desktop to work. KDE looks ok but none of the menus work. It does seem to work ok with the Metisse desktop though. So i will persevere for a little while longer.
