Network Manager Corrupts Network

Postby Bobby » Sat Mar 17, 2007 13:10

This is a flawed product that should be fixed or removed.

It kills the dns settings by removing the search option in resolv.conf. Why anyone would even think of doing that is beyond me.

First it configures the network settings and then decides at some point to just remove it. In fact it emptied the file completely.

Maybe we can have some sort of install or config option to work around it. It's nice and easy to use to enter the information. But once done it has to be killed. If running dhcp (and it does not wipe things out) it might be allowed to live. But if one chooses static IP it MUST die once done. (It looks like --no-daemon should be used.)

Sorry if I sound harsh, but these underhanded config tools are more damaging than helpful. Yeah, I can find some way around it but as soon as I do an upgrade or something like that it's on all over again. What about those who could never figure it out? Killing your network connection is not a good way to win users.

In 99% of all cases Networkmanager works ;)
Sure, there are some setups which doesnt play nicely with networkmanager, but sooner or later all distributions will switch to it...

And some must be the first to use them, becasue if noone starts to use, no one can find bugs...

I agree 100% with you Bobby. The question is that user should be given a choice to use it or not. Network manager works if you are using a standalone desktop but if you need a Internet gateway such as home gateway just get rid of it. It is a pain!!!!!!

Further it beats me how someone wants to circumvent a decent well tested and great system such as resolv.conf. In sabayon they use another tool called resolvconf check /etc/resolvconf/ . My philosophy is that the best technique is the simplest not what fancies you. I am a software developer and this approach has saved myself from trouble many times.

The logic of using such a convoluted mechanism beats me!!!
