Automatic detection of ATI/NVidia Cards

Postby digiplaya » Sun May 14, 2006 17:28

Lxnay,

I've been wondering how to implement the automatic detection of ATI or NVIDIA video card for my distro that I'm making, and then load the proper driver based on whether the user has ATI or NVidia card.

In other words, I want this to happen when the user boots up my distro:

1. After most of the booting process is done, detect user's video card.
2. Load the proper driver for that video card.
3. Configure Xorg Server so that it loads everything properly.

Is there a script you use, if so, please send it to me if it's distributable. Email: thetechnojedi@gmail.com

Grazie!!! Danke!!!

The script that I've made is available on every RR4/RR64 release and even on the installer (this one is much more updated and clean)

You can find that on: http://www.lxnay.scarlet.nl/gli/latest-rr4-gli.tar.bz2
it's under misc directory and it's called redetect-video.sh

I hope to have satisfied your curiosity.

One question: For my distro, will I have to install both ATI and NVIDIA drivers as well as your script? I'm going to be using the Linux Live scripts to make the final ISO.

yes and I suggest you to not use linux live scripts but the gentoo tool catalyst, if you want to create a gentoo-based distro...
