I need help please

Postby JR2CooL » Thu May 04, 2006 13:37

Hello peeps
I dl and am runing RR4 and first let me say it is the best I've seen.
I am as n00b as a newbie can be when it comes to linux but in the last 2 weeks i have tryed over 20 different distros looking for one that a n00b like myself can run and I have found it here with RR4.
RR4 does everything I'm looking for in a distro and it does it with ease.
So major thumbs up.

Now as I said several times already I am a major n00b and have ran into a problem that I cannot figure out on my own.

When I install to drive and but up I do not get a graphical log in, instead its a text log in screen and i input my user and pass but then it goes to a $ symbol I saw in another topic here whereyou said to enter xterm and i did that but then i get a msg saying display isnt set.
I have done the install numerous times already and at the end of choices i have chosen different things such as xdm and so on.
Could someone tell me please what i need to set in these areas.
I would like to have the KDE desktop and I am installing with the entire DVD to hard drive

I know n00bs can be a pain in the ass but I ask that you guys help this n00b as i desperately want to get away from windows
Thank You in advance

Start the desktop manager

Try
Code: Select all
startx
and if that does not do what you want, log in as root(or su - root) and type either
Code: Select all
gdm
,
Code: Select all
kdm
, or
Code: Select all
xdm
(I prefer gdm myself)
Come see me at #linux on irc.rizon.net

INIT 5 ..if nothing, STARTX ..if nothing, check if you have X11 folder ( /etc/X11). If nothing, install your gfx-drivers from the manufacturers site (xorg wont install without them) and after that, EMERGE -XORG11 to install xorg..after that

ENV-UPDATE
SOURCE /ETC/PROFILE

Being noob, try and use XORGCONFIG..

Now, try STARTX

Nothing?

I'm total noob myself..but I had the same problem after installing the damn thing to my k2/400. It has way old TNT card and it seems, the drivers won't install automagically. Got bored trying to get it work and downloaded RR64 instead.

Here is the link to the original GENTOO HOW TO:

Thnx for the responses guys i will give it another shot later this evening
I hope to get it going cause i realy like this distro

Graet Release lxnay I just wish the install was as user friendly as the actual os itself but I guess sometimes we must do a bit more work to have a distro as sweet as this one

Theehee..user friendly = microsoft styled "click yes" or something that gives the end user options to choose from? I like the installer, but I suppose one only likes it, if one knows what it's like to install gentoo without it. Just for fun, go ahead and try ;) you will realize the installer is great :D

yes your right about that...
It is user friendly and im sure its great thats why im going thru all this head ache because i know eventually i will previle.
the installer is user friendly. only prob is sometimes it doesnt complete the install. i hadnt seen your suggestions until i had already deleted the suscessfull install so now im trying to complete that as sometimes it completes and other times it fails at partitioning and other times loading grub but once i do
make a suscessfull install i will try your sugestions.
I dont want it to sound asthough im wining cause im not im just anxious to be booted up from the hard drive. until then i will continue using the live option

when it is all done it will have been well worth it and again keep in mind im a n00b

LOL

I think that the Installer will get better and better in the future. Remember that's an alpha software developed by some Gentoo developers. Just wait... For now, I only suggest to install RR4 or RR64 onto spare HDs.

yea it is a spare drive. i have my other drives disconected just incase.
I realy dunno whats happening here ive ran numerous installs now and still end up with samething. after suscessful install reboot and in verbose booting stops for log in. if i log in with user name i set and type any of the suggested commands xterm. start x kdm etc etc it says only root can make the request
so i go in as root and it says display not set
on dif installs i have tryed numerous combinations although i prefer KDE i chose gdm/genome and that had the worst effect of all

ive also tryed everything in all other post

if you can think of anything please let me know

Well, did the X install? I mean, do you have the /etc/X11 folder? Can you run XORGCONFIG to setup the screen? If not, I'm convinced it's still lacking the gfx-drivers which the installer is for some reason failing to install. This makes it impossible for xorg to install, leaving you with no gui at all..

I suppose it's installer related bug, which should be corrected by the people who are writing the installer.

I still need to ask, are you doing the DVD to HD install, or STAGE 3? I had your problem when I tried to install using STAGE 3..now I'm running RR64 with XGL on my main box without any problems (well, some graphical corruption every now and then but that's something I was expecting)
