This is my first post here , I hope it's not off topic for this section
I noticed that you are wanting to buy a new "AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+" computer for compiling , and that someone suggested a Opteron instead.
I was wondering if it would be worth the effort to test / time compiling on each CPU to see which would be better.
Could you ssh into one of mine , run a few tests , and I'll switch you to the other ? I have done this with OSX for a Team member to test run software on , Linux should work even better , Right ?
I have an Opteron 165 X2 at 2 GHz and an AMD 64 3800+ X2 at 2.3 GHz. ( and a couple of AMD 64 3200+ single cores ) Each has 1 GB of ram running Dual Channel , and Broadband internet
They currently have Knoppix 4.0.2 Live booted running Stanford's Folding @ Home Clients 24/7 with USB Flash Drives for storage , but I can reconfigure as needed. They are all Blades , No cases , which makes changing things a snap !
I have a New 80 Gig HDD and a DVD recorder I can set up for your use on either CPU , and then switch them both to the other when you are ready.
I would also be willing to let you use one on a somewhat regular basis , I'm sure we can work something out where I can still get some Folding done
What do you think ?
