Got a similar problem:

SL 3.26 is not recognizing my atapi DVR... seems to be a kernel problem
BIOS and grub are seeing the device, but once the kernel is booted SL cant find a root partition.
It probes all devices, waits for some more to come and than gives me a promt to specify root, which i can not do, because the kernel is to "blind" ...

now comes the voodoo: in 1 of 4 boot cycles it works and my DVR is recognized as /dev/sr0 ... so i installed it on my hd.

But now the kernel again (and always) fails to see my DVR-device!

What can I do??

(im building now a 2.6.19-r5 kernel with some old ide-code activated ... we will see)

This is really becoming a widespread problem :)
To bad...I really like Sabayon, but it doesn't look like this is gonna be fixed before 3.3 and by then I have already bought my Apple iMac.

EDIT:
I just had an idea (stupid I didn't think about it earlier)
Since 3.2 does work on my pc, isn't it possible to install 3.2 and than update it to 3.26 with or without the 3.26 DVD???

I could just try it myself but since installation takes 2+ hours I don't want to waste that time, so I quick answer would be better.

I had a similar problem had to play with ide/sata bios settings DVD would then install about 3/4 the way through then freeze, then i uninstalled my wireless card (netgear) and it installed no problems at all.

Looked at other gentoo distro's and they load plenty more modules for SATA , SCSI , PATA etc and others to be more compatible.
SL loads only 5 or
This is maybe why you can not boot from the dvd as it misses some you specifically need.

Press alt+f1 during other linux boot cd/dvd's and you will see it loading modules sata-something.

I am sure lx will fix this during the next beta maybe in 3.27 .

Could work:
3.2 install + point update or copy portage dircetory over to /ect/usr/portage/????/??? and then just maybe emerge --update world ??? not sure of the correct option.

This way you might still have the 3.2 kernel but with updated everything else not sure.

"loop mount" iso and then loop mount squashfs image from the iso to get access and not use dvd ???

Should at hd installed boot time before above stuff pass a option to loopmount iso and boot from it ?? Maybe similar to 1st option grub option.

3.2 hd boot grub screen enter loop mount option for iso and then it might just work from there with normal 3.26 boot screen / menu ?? not sure speculating.

Hope this helps.
Try asking in THE SHED in SL forum's.

The problem can be that ata_piix SATA driver grabs ownership over the IDE ports when it is loaded

solved - partly

Postby cybergorf » Fri Jan 12, 2007 14:25

As I wrote I got the problem, that the kernel was not finding my DVD (or only in 1 of 4 trys)

After installation I got rid of the initramfs and booted directly from / ... and there it is! My drives are all showing up now...

but i still dont know the exact reason for the former misbehavior ...

What if I install 3.2 and after that try to install 3.26...Do you think that it will recognize my drive?

Well, I just tried to install 3.26 on an older Compaq Laptop. 2003 model, P4 2.8GHz w/ 80GB 7200 RPM Hitachi Travelstar I just put in. The DVD boots, I can select any of the install options, then it just says can't find source........Sucks, I am having issues with installing it on my main desktop also! Different problem, equally frustrating. Sabayon is drop dead gorgeous and I want it...........I just can't have it
3.1 gave me no trouble in either system, maybe I'll just go back to that.
