sda must have a GPT disk label

Postby kantaki » Fri Feb 22, 2013 21:23

I followed this guide https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?titl ... ners_Guide . Then after the partitioning I got the error message "sda must have a GPT disk label".

Then I followed this guide https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?titl ... New_System

I think it is a little bit dated but anyway, I realized I have an windows 8 laptop so I probably need the boot/efi.

Then I followed this guide http://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title ... ayon_Linux

But I still get the same error message "sda must have a GPT disk label". Any idea what went wrong?

No one can help on this?

The problem I have is the same: Must boot from USB in EFI mode, but install in MBR.

Maybe your Win8 installation is in BIOS mode and your HDD is then partitioned using MBR table.

Let's check you UEFI environment.
Boot the Sabayon Live system and once in there, open terminal, become root user and post output of
Code: Select all
# modprobe efivars && efibootmgr -v

Sabayon is running in UEFI If you see something similar to this
Code: Select all
BootCurrent: 0009
Timeout: 1 seconds
BootOrder: 0009,0005,0004,0008,0002,0003,0006,0007
Boot0000  Setup
Boot0001  Boot Menu
Boot0002* USB FDD:      _some_strange_code_
Boot0003* ATA SSD:      _some_strange_code_
Boot0004* ATA HDD: WDC WD3200BPVT-24JJ5T0                       ACPI(a0341d0,0)PCI(1f,2)_some_strange_code_
Boot0005* ATAPI CD: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SN-208AB                    ACPI(a0341d0,0)PCI(1f,2)_some_strange_code_
Boot0006* USB HDD:      _some_strange_code_
Boot0007* USB CD:       _some_strange_code_
Boot0008* PCI LAN: Realtek PXE B03 D00  BIOS_some_strange_code_

Once in Sabayon Live, also paste here output of
Code: Select all
# fdisk -l

"fdisk" can't read GPT partition.

Code: Select all
# parted -l

I'm looking for fdisk -l output 'cause I simply need to check this message
Code: Select all
WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.

I (for now) don't mind partitioning setup, but what I need is to understand what kind of setup exist on that PC:
a. BIOS+MBR
b. BIOS+GPT
c. UEFI+MBR <--- :pukel: :!:
d. UEFI+GPT
