Sound suddenly stopped working

One day I was fine and dandy all was well, however once I shut down my computer before ending a skype call, I got static that was the exact same static I heard during the skype call, rebooted again, and got no sound this time. I wonder if this would be similar when I tried to get my headset to work (and failed ) I'd like to know if I could get either my Gamecom 780 headset to work or my Logitec speakers to work.

have you checked your audio levels in alsamixer? Just run it in your terminal emulator
