kernel upgrade with Entropy failed

Postby wintux » Fri Feb 22, 2013 0:19

Hi,

after installing Sabayon 11 (root partition on ssd with btrfs, /var and /home on hdd with ext4 and some others at non standard mount points) and updating the packages I followed these instructions in order to upgrade the kernel from 3.7.0 to 3.7.4~2.
(Began with
Code: Select all
# equo install --pretend linux-sabayon
but normally this should have no effect, has it?)
Then
Code: Select all
# equo install --ask linux-sabayon

Obviously the dependencies for the old 3.7.0-sabayon kernel are updated and the new one is not at /boot :
Code: Select all
# eselect kernel list
Available kernel symlink targets:
  [1]   linux-3.7.0-sabayon *
#

Can the btrfs root-partition be responsible for the unsuccessful operation? :?
Where are downloaded packages/kernel-packages stored on a Sabayon/Gentoo-System?
I am warned:
Do not reboot until you have completed all the steps in this article!

So I would be very grateful for help... :eye:

what is the deal with all the kernel stuff updating lately? Kernel revisions will automatically install with regular updates, it's not a kernel change persay like going from 3.6 to 3.7 to 3.8 viewtopic.php?f=86&t=29195

eselect kernel list is not going to show every kernel revision as the kernel is still 3.7 A kernel can go thru many revisions, doesn't require the stuff as a kernel version change. So if you are running kernel 3.7 and 50 revisions come along, you will automatically update and still be at kernel 3.7, but you will not automatically update to 3.8 kernel. That requires kernel and modules to all change.

I guess that needs to be made clear on wiki or someting, that is like 3rd question in 24 hours on same thing

Right. And at this opportunity the non-kernel-switcher ways should be moved to a seperate article for non-beginners …

So, sorry and thank you very much for answering!

1) If it's true that bugfix releases of the current kernel like 3.7.4-sabayon
wolfden wrote:will automatically install with regular updates
, why can't I find them at /boot (like in other distros)? And bzImage is still linked to kernel-genkernel-x86_64-3.7.0-sabayon ...

2) I'd like to summarize the received information and my conclusions:
It was unnecessary but harmless to execute:
Code: Select all
# equo install --ask linux-sabayon
because no upgrade release 3.X.Y (with higher release number X) of the kernel was available.
So the warning
Do not reboot until you have completed all the steps in this article!
doesn't affect me
and I don't have to fear problems when rebooting.

Is that all true?

3) Coming from Kubuntu I'm not familiar with version denotations like 3.7-r3 .
I looked here to remember the version numbering conventions of Linux, but it didn't help me for that denotation.

Where can I find information about Sabayon's system of version numbering?

Kernel in /boot and uname -r will still display 3.7 no matter how many revisions are made to kernel. This will hold true with any kernel 3.5, 3.6, 3.8 - the reasoning I believe is cause the modules/drivers are built for that kernel so they don't have to be rebuilt on each revision. Normally with a kernel change you need to rebuild the modules/drivers in a gentoo system. So when you upgrade to 3.8, you will need to use kernel-switcher to install kernel and drivers.
