Sleep button question

Postby harpingon » Fri Feb 22, 2013 9:04

Hello.

A bit of background. Been using Linux on and off since 1994, with Slackware, and I do lots of admin and installations of RHEL, and SLES linux servers, as well as Solaris, HPUX and AIX. Been using Mac OS X for the past good number of years, and haven't had so much to do with modern desktop linux environments.

Came to Sabayon because of hating what I was seeing in Mint, and disliking Ubuntu 12.10, and not getting along with Fedora 18 much either. So here I am. Hello :)

Mostly getting on 'okay-ish' with this installation. Getting printer to work was difficult, but did it. I chose the Gnome edition of Sabayon.

A critical feature for me is sleep/suspend/hibernate. Ideally hybrid, but suspend to ram is sufficient. My keyboard has a suspend button on which works in Windows, and it kind of worked in Ubuntu (the suspend worked, but the display manager always crashed on resume).

I know that suspend works in Sabayon, because the suspend after timeout feature works. Can resume too, with graphics and network working. Yay for that. The problems are

1) suspend button on keyboard doesn't. It just locks the screen to the password entry unlock screen.

2) can't wake using keyboard. Have to use the power button, and the PC is in a cupboard :(

I'd like to get these problems solved if I can. Then I'm well on the way to being a happy person.

Thanks everyone, and sorry for the ramble.

Oh, and WHERE IS VI, YOU FIENDS!

Yes, I know. But it could be installed by default :(

I am no friend of suspend, but ...

Can you determine the keycode with xev? Would be the first step to take.
I do not have GNOME (and dislike the v3), but it should be located here:
Gnome Control Center > Keyboard > Shortcuts

Well, it's picking up the key and doing something vaguely sensible with it, it locks the desktop when I press the sleep button.

What it doesn't do, is sleep. I'll check xev and the gnome configs again tonight, thank you. I did check the gnome keyboard shortcut control panel applet thing, and didn't see sleep key in the shortcuts.

I'm probably going to move to Mate or KDE anyway, so this will probably change things in this regard. Finding I'm not liking the Gnome much :/
