SL11 UEFI boot confusion

Postby dhave » Wed Feb 20, 2013 22:48

I'm intrigued with the Sabayon method of booting via UEFI, but it's not working for me. My machine is set to UEFI only, with secure boot activated. When I boot via the new SL 11 installation CD (Gnome version), I get sent to a simple grub prompt.

If I use rEFInd (previously installed, as I use it to load Arch Linux via UEFI) to boot the mokmanager, I am presented with an option to register the key, which I then locate on the CD. But, after registering, I seem to be in a loop. I can exit up to boot, but then I get sent back to the simple grub prompt.

I think I, and maybe others, too, need a step-by-step guide for this special booting procedure.

Thank you.

on my laptop I have both since its bios is windows 7 compatible 2010-2012 manufacturing time table.
trying the UFEI I too got loop, however , booting regular I got no troubles ,

So far with sabayon I find I need to re-install it , as often the Xserver breaks on updates and fining its is not as easy for me since xfre86-config xsetup or xconfig are gone, and most of the nvidia debugging steps seem to make it worse.

and for a few years I roved, fixing winodws servers , and traveling ALOT, so as for the Xorg server.... RUST ...
were previously I worked In Windows/Linux/Solaris shops.

my desktop neither method worked for booting hover Sab 9/10 goes on without issue.
desktop is a becoming a legacy windows 7 multi-boot- x64 system , in much need of a GPU card for the moment. before I just build a new system , and do a FreeNas conversion of the older desktop.

I had the same Problem with the Sabayon 11 CDX amd64 Install CD on my Lenovo Thinkpad L430 (Bootmenue only in Legacy Mode).

If you use the same Image on an USB-Stick the Laptop (with UEFI and Secure Boot) starts the Installation.

I used this program for getting the iso on the USB-Stick: "http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/"

On my B570e (Lenovo laptop) the LiveUSB works only if USB are set to Legacy Mode (aka BIOS, not UEFI), althought it doesn't even recognize the USB pen!
I see different behaviour if:
a. I boot from DVD from setting it to 1st in boot order inside UEFI menu
or
b. I boot from DVD choosing it from the Boot menu that appears if I press F12 while PC starts
