The error message should up after I had used the terminal to delete Sulfur following an abortive session which was trying to load it. During the terminal successful process i was faced with a number of questions in order to proceed. One was Exit, which for some reason I ignored and chose -5 and exited the terminal. The result of this was the above error message and in addition my desktop icon for Entropy now longer works. What can I do to remedy this ? SOLVED

Concerning your desktop icon … it's a file called "sulfur.desktop" on your Desktop. You can replace the content with the following:

The main changes are the "Exec=rigo" and "Icon=/usr/share/rigo/icons/repo.svg" lines, so the command "rigo" is started, when you hit the button and another image path is used.

Before I comment on the problem in hand I think I should mention that I have been using various flavours of Linux for more than five years; starting with Mandrake, followed by Debian and latterly Fedora. For 99% of the time I have used GUI. So far as the command line is concerned I am very much a newbie, having avoided it, hence the posting of this query under the newbie category.

My kit is as follows:-

Intel Core 2 Duo E7300 (2.66 Hz, 1066MHz, 3MB)
Memory Dual Channel 3GB
Hard Drive 555GB serial ATA non Raid (7200 Rpm)
Video card 128 MB ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro
DVD+/-(Read/Write) 16X

This is the first time I have become acquainted with Sabayon having installed it at the beginning of this week.

To amplify the problem I have been faced with, it started when a desktop message stated that there were some 1,700 upgrades to be done, most if not all relating to Sulfur. Being thus advised I did so.
However, during that process it stalled and aborted. This was because a particular file it tried to automatically download from some 78 different mirrors could not continue. This appeared to cause some damage to Entropy. I found out that there was a bug and a report has been filed.

I decided to do as I was instructed and look at the Entropy web site. There it says (page 5) that Sulfur will no longer exist and is being replaced by Rigo.

On a general Google search a contributor said he had deleted Sulfur with no adverse problems. So it seemed to me to do likewise. I therefore decided to grasp the nettle of the Command Line (which I have previously ignored ) and do as suggested and remove Sulfur in accordance with the procedure shown on page 4 of the Entropy web site. That is “# equo remove sulfur –ask” which seemed to do the trick.

The error message when trying to launch Entropy is “There was an error launching the application. Details: Failed to execute child process "sulfur" (No such file or directory)”

Hence my posting of the problem on this forum.

As a consequence Entropy has disappeared from my Desktop and the small left sided Entropy icon is just a pale blue rectangle.

Before I received your response I entered the “Menu” desktop icon, as part of my investigating this new system, and a couple of the options were unticked so I ticked them. An immediate response resulted as a message which said:-

“your system currently has an outdated version of sys-apps/entropy installed, the latest available version is 161. It is recommended that you upgrade to the latest before updating any other packages”. Load package manager.

This I presume I am unable to do, at least as I cannot access Entropy anyway.

I now return to your helpful response. In doing so however I have now idea how to start the process you suggest bearing in mind my almost total lack of Command Line experience.

There has been quite a bit of traffic about sulfur. It is now deprecated and no longer on the servers. My advice is (in the CLI) to do

equo remove sulfur --nodeps

(just in case some bits remain)

equo update --force

equo install rigo

(the replacement for sulfur)

 equo install entropy --relaxed

and then

Code: Select all

equo upgrade --ask

And keep your fingers crossed.

There will probably be some conf files to update too. That message will appear at the end of the upgrade and, unless you have a personal configuration the best bet is to "merge all without asking" which may be -5 or -3 ( I can't remember but it will tell you which one.

Thanks - I have done as you suggested. During the process a general upgrade took place but which had to be aborted (not by me-by the system- as a particular file "dev-java:icedtea-7.2.3.3~o.tbz2" could not be found at any of the mirrors that were tried. That is just by the way.

So far as the particular challenge is concerned the original error message is still shown when I check on the entropy icon, that is the small one on the left hand side of the desktop. The main entropy icon usually on the desktop is still nowhere to be found.

Where do I go from here ?

The entropy icon refers to sulfur so will not do anything. Delete it and add the icon for rigo. I don't know whether you are using kde or gnome. I know nothing of gnome but in kde the easiest way is to choose "add to desktop" when right clicking on rigo in the application launcher.
