HP All in one Print/Fax/Scan....HPLIP...[Solved]

Postby greendave8 » Sun Dec 30, 2012 2:06

Hi ALL,

I just installed an HP 8600 all in one Fax/Printer/Scanner, and Sabayon sees it and prints to it with no problems. It is installed on the wifi side of my network, printing fine from Linux boxes and Windows boxes.

However, scanning to a windoze machine is no problem, they show up on the HP's user interface (so long as the software is installed, in those windoze machines), but I cannot scan an image to any of my Linux boxes, as they dont show up on the 8600 interface....
Am I missing some linux software in the boxes, that will detect the 8600?

So far I can print from Win/Lin boxes, but can only scan -to a Win type box....

As always, suggestions will be helpful and appreciated....

If you want to scan, you need:
Code: Select all
media-gfx/sane-backends
media-gfx/sane-frontends
media-gfx/xsane

When started, Xsane should detect the scanner, if not you have to provide the exact address = SANE URI
You'll get it with (supposed hplip is installed)
Code: Select all
hp-makeuri [OPTIONS] [SERIAL NO.|USB ID|IP|DEVNODE]

To get the address for the scanner, you can use the -s option and the IP.
You get something like
Code: Select all
hpaio:/net/Officejet_8600?ip=192.168.1.4

You should be able to start the scanner for example with Alt+F2 -> xsane hpaio:/net/Officejet_8600?ip=192.168.1.4

Thank you svantoviit,
I have all the front end /back end stuff installed, but sane still does not find the scanner. Using its ip address, it finds it but says "Failed to open device................... Operation not supported". Maybe my all in one is not ready for scanning to Linux yet?

Thanks again for your input...

greendave8, you have to use the SANE URI to connect to the scanner with Xsane as described in my previous post.
Your model should be fully supported, of course you need to have hplip installed too.

Thanks Svantoviit,
I uninstalled the printer through CUPS interface, and re-installed it using the HPLIP toolbox, using the network address in the drop down box. It installed, and now it all works...! Yay....thanks again for the help, just shows me again what a great distro and community Sabayon is.

Happy new year!
