Eclipse removed from repository [Solved]

Postby thecata » Mon Dec 10, 2012 12:47

I had eclipse-sdk installed from entropy, but in yesterdays update, equo told me it was removed from repository and I should uninstall it. Any comments why it was removed? I used it as a C++ IDE (with CDT), and I would like to stick with it.
I know it can still be installed from source, but having it in the repository would be nice - though I would prefer if it was with fewer dependencies (it used to pull a lot of libraries, such as tomcat, eclipse-ecj, ant and other such stuff that were probably not strictly necessary).

Thanks in advance,
Catalin

Eclipse has been removed because the version in entropy was terribly obsolete, portage doesn't seem to want to update it anytime soon, this unfortunate situation went on for an extremely long time and made dropping eclipse the only viable solution.
This decision has been made since using eclipse is possible simply downloading the tarball available at:
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

Given the fact that the downloaded software is "confined" to a directory, it can be easily placed into the user home directory and doesn't cause any problem to the system or to the package manager.
The only requirement is a Java virtual machine, in my case it works perfectly with icedtea.

I was aware the eclipse version was old, but it didn't bother me that much (currently, I use it only for small C++ console applications, so as long as the plugins worked, it was enough for me). When I needed a newer version at work, I just installed it from their website, but as a quick install method, it was nice having it in entropy.
Anyway, thanks for the clarifications. I wasn't sure why it suddenly disappeared. Marking topic as solved.
