Phone and Tablet Syncing - Android based device - Galaxy S3

Clementine says it needs mtp support compiled in.

I tried to do it myself but it wanted to update a bunch of libraries and I couldn't get everything working like the sabayon community had it.... I sense a major library / glibc update coming :-) I saw in the bug reports that someone was requesting lastfm in Clementine as well, but I wasn't sure if that was the right place to ask.

I have had an iphone for years, and dealt with the constant battle of apple releasing updates that purposely prevented me from enjoying syncing with my Sabayon machine. I finally gave in and bought a Samsung Galaxy S3. So having been used to quirky sync problems, I am expecting that things should smooth out for this device in a few months. That being said, if someone knows good ways to sync android based phones/tablets that might be helpful.

When I check the phone, once the connection is established with the PC it lets me choose between a ptp connection and an mtp connection. Once it is mounted in clementine, clementine says that it needs to have mtp compiled in or it will be very slow and buggy copying files if it works at all. Clementine was right about slow, but since it has been copying about 100 mp3s over for 2 hours or so already I don't know how successful it was yet.

Has anyone had any similar experiences or overcome a similar issue yet? This is my first time trying to sync an android based device.

If you search on the SL Packages Web page you'll see that Clementine in the Entropy repository has been built with USE="-mtp". You can request it to be rebuilt with USE="mtp" by clicking on the link 'Bugs' at the top of this page and filing a request.

Until the rebuilt package is put in the Entropy repository, I recommend AirDroid for moving files to and from the Samsung Galaxy S3. For details of AirDroid, see my blog post AirDroid, a handy Android app for managing your phone from Linux. I use AirDroid to move files between my laptop and my Samsung Galaxy Note II.

By the way, if you're a KDE user you will be interested to know that Dolphin file manager in KDE 4.10 will have support for MTP, so KDE users will be able to mount a Samsung Galaxy S3. KDE 4.10 is due to be released sometime in January 2013.
