Icons in task manager for non KDE apps doesnt't show

Postby felixlinares » Wed Oct 31, 2012 19:57

Hello,
I have installed X48 a HP48 emulator, configured it and make it run nicely, also added a menu entry for easier access, the problem is when I launch the program and it opens in the taskbar instead showing the Icon I made for it It shows the X icon.
I saved the icon in a Icons folder inside my home folder, it is in PNG format.

Application running, you can see the X icon instead the icon in the menu in the task manager, firefox and Krusader are fine with their icons.

In case any of you want the Icon I made you can get it here :

Strange, as I don't experience this problem. There used to be a bug in KDE several versions back, and the work-around was to tick 'Only show in KDE' in KDE Menu Editor, so you could try doing that, although, as I say, it was fixed ages ago.

Thank you for your help, I did as you said enabling the 'Only show in KDE option' but the X icon is still bothering me.

Hmm... I wonder if Plasma requires Panel icons to be SVG rather than PNG? I could be wrong, but it rings a bell now that I think about it. Panel icons in the System Tray certainly have to be SVG icons, so I wonder if that applies to the rest of the Panel? Can you try a SVG icon instead of a PNG icon? If you don't have your calculator icon in SVG format, try any SVG icon file just to see if it is displayed in the Panel. Here's one that will do just to test my hunch: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File ... ulator.svg

PNG is well supported under KDE. Another hand SVG, not so well.

The icon's name is probably the problem. You can manually make the icon association with your icon by making a right click selection the "X" icon . A menu will appear with the option "icon setting" . Next you will have to click on the picture. This will give you the possibility to choose your icon.

^Well spotted, Asimov. I've created a KDE Menu entry using a PNG icon to try it out. The precise instructions depend on which Plasmoid you are using to display running tasks on the Panel. In my case I'm using 'Icon-Only Task Manager' and, when I right-click on an X Windows icon on the Panel, there is no option 'icon setting' but there is an option 'Icon-Only Task Manager Settings'. If I select that and then tick 'Always use launcher icons' then the correct icon appears in the Panel instead of the X Windows icon.

EDIT (November 16, 2012): If I do the above the Firefox icon in the Panel is a blank square without the famous Firefox emblem. The icons of other apps such as Thunderbird are still displayed normally, though.

The icon-manager of KDE is bugged. When you change your icon-set, only KDE icons are fully refreshed. If you know the difference between a KDE icons-set and a Gnome icons-set. Its would be very helpful.

For some obscured reason, some icons-set do not appeared in KDE.
