multi libs - how does it work? [Solved]

Postby Butch Cassidy » Fri Nov 09, 2012 0:16

Say I install sabayon base and download KDE on top of it. Then say I want one or two gtk apps. Say I pick Firefox in Rigo and download it. What happens? Do I get the entire gnome desktop downloaded first or something? Or does it just download exactly what it needs for Firefox (or a-another app). Thanks.

Hi,
this question isn't really related to multilibs but to dependencies, anyway entropy downloads and installs exactly what it needs to run the selected application, it won't download the entire GNOME environment.

As micia says, your question doesn't relate to multilibs (simultaneous support for 64-bit and 32-bit apps). For an explanation of multilib support, see e.g. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-amd ... l#multilib

And if I run Sabayon x64 (which I will be doing) the same still applies - if, for example, I need a 32 bit app, Entropy will only download exactly what it needs for that particular app? So I don't have to specify something or other when using Rigo application browser, it just automagically does it?

If you have a 64 bit environment entropy doesn't download 32 bit applications, but 64 bit ones.
Some applications, like proprietary software with 32 bit only binaries, such as skype, need a multilib environment to work properly on a 64 bit installation. Sabayon provides such environment and if you decide to install those, entropy is going to follow the same approach, download only what is necessary to run it, nothing more.
