Should I upgrade to Sab 10 From 9? Why?

Postby Douglas_E_Knapp » Tue Nov 06, 2012 10:40

I am running Sab 9. It works great as long as you do your updates at the CLI. Is there any reason to upgrade to 10? Why? It is very risky? I have noted that 9 has VERY up to date software and it is stable.

Thasks.

PS I just started Sab with Sab 9 coming from Kubuntu. Kubutu was great but these days it crashes more than XP ever did. I sad day for Ubuntu. On the other hand Sab 9 is the most stable system I have ever used. On the other hand the problems I did face were KILL HARD to fix but I was luckily advanced enough to solve the problems. (updates have dropped out my graphics driver, messed up Grub and done other really bad things. Luckily in each case it was easy to fix as an advanced user but I would never with these problems on a newbie.) I wish Sab would become good enough to give to my mother. I would do it in a heart beat if she lived close enough for me to drive to her house and fix the problems for her but it is a 11 hour flight now and I would hate to try and solve these types of problems over the phone. You guys are SOOOO CLOSE to making the perfect newbie dist!!!

Sabayon upgrade is rolling release and version number are more for information than a real upgrade.
I start with 5.3 and now I am on 10 with regular upgrade only.
It means by running equo update you will do the release upgrade just check :
Code: Select all
sabayon ~ # cat /etc/sabayon-*
Sabayon Linux 5.3 amd64 K
Sabayon Linux amd64 10
sabayon ~ # ls -ld /etc/sabayon-*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 26  5 juin   2010 /etc/sabayon-edition
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 23  7 sept. 20:32 /etc/sabayon-release

You see I installed 5.3 in June 2010 and I am now on Sab10 since Sept 2012.
Note that since then I had a few upgrades going wrong, it was easily fixed by checking this site but I am not sure your mother can.

Code: Select all
douglas@Frog ~ $ cat /etc/sabayon-* |grep Sab
Sabayon Linux 9 amd64 KDE
Sabayon Linux amd64 10
douglas@Frog ~ $ ls -ld /etc/sabayon-*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root    26 Jun  7 23:56 /etc/sabayon-edition
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 34169 Jun  7 23:55 /etc/sabayon-pkglist
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root    23 Sep  7 20:32 /etc/sabayon-release
douglas@Frog ~ $

I get about the same, so in other words don't dist-upgrade because you don't need to?

exaclty dont need dist upgrade or so.
You are already SL 10.
Actually the version upgrade is just changing this file, it is a snapshot of the current version for CD or like media.
