Switch to kernel 3.6 made the system unbootable [Solved]

Postby msdobrescu » Mon Nov 05, 2012 19:38

Hello,

I have switched to the kernel 3.6 and now it cannot boot anymore.
It lists some modules loading then drops to some console.
My system is i7 920 + nVidia 560Ti.
I've tried to go to rescue mode, choose kernel 3.5 to boot, but still same issue.
What should I do to restore the OS (not to reinstall...)?

Thank you,
Mike

You could chroot using a LiveDVD/CD and try running kerner-switcher to revert to the kernel that worked.

You mean kernel-switcher :mrgreen:

To revert (3.5 Kernel)
Code: Select all
# kernel-switcher switch linux-sabayon:3.5

Good luck

Thanks, but it did not work.
It did not change.
I have 3.5 and 3.6, both behave the same: "could not find the root block device in ."

So, I have 3.5 and 3.6.
In both cases it asks for the root device, I give it (/dev/sda3) and it continues booting as it should.
What could I do?

There is an error:

Code: Select all
Cannot find grub. Cannot properly configure kernel
/var/tmp/entropy/packages/amd64/5/sys-kernel_linux-sabayon-3.6-r1_0.tbz2/portage/sys-kernel/linux-sabayon-3.6-r1/temp/environment: line 3782: /sbin/grub-mkdevicemap: No such file or directory

Any idea what happens?

Thank you.

But it's necessary to mount with write permissions, isn't it? Like this:

Code: Select all
# mount -o remount,rw /boot && grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Code: Select all
mount /boot && grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
mount: can't find /boot in /etc/fstab

Running equo upgrade, then equo update, revealed that some more upgrades were to be done.
Now, kernel 3.6-r3 is installed.
At reboot, grub have reset in a loop, so I've reinstalled grub from the live dvd.

Something very wrong there is..
