Which game to test graphics?

Which game would you recommend as best for quick testing?

It should be:

- very reliable
- open source so we all know it well
- small download so quick for testing
- 3D but shows a wide range of hardware performance

I think a game communicates better than a benchmark for people. Less technical people have little reference for benchmarks and tend to forget them.

The reason for this is that I've landed a new laptop from work and I'm wondering how good it is and I'm not familiar with a benchmark. After installing linux the first thing I do to make sure most things are working is run a 3D game.
