Install Sabayon on ZFS?

Postby ndowens » Tue Oct 30, 2012 14:44

I have seen this article https://forum.sabayon.org/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=28018&p=153383#p153228 and I seen it seems to be possible, I didn't want to reply to a SOLVED thread so I thought I would open a new one. How would I install Sabayon on a ZFS partition. I seen how to do so if installing Gentoo, in which we should be able to on Sabayon as well. Would I have to "tar" my current partition(btrfs) as a backup and create a zfs partition?

If anybody could give me instructions how to do so, I would appreciate it. :D

God save you. Perish the thought, to put it on zfs. It is too experimental.

I am unsure of that, I am currently using Btrfs and it sounds as ZFS on Linux may be concidered more stable than it is,.

Actually, by reading this thread, you could see how ZFS is pretty solid and reliable:

Especially the posts by ryao:

Installing Sabayon over ZFS root is quite hard though, as the Sabayon installer doesn't support it yet, it involves many manual steps.
I am currently experimenting with it.

So far the closest migrating an existing Gentoo install instructions is here https://github.com/pendor/gentoo-zfs-install/blob/master/install/GentooMigration.mdown

Basically all you have to do is partition the disk and setup a ZFS root, then restore a backup of your previous install in the new ZFS root, chroot in that then install GRUB2 and a ZFS capable initramfs. The process is a bit long, once I'll have a perfectly functioning ZFS install I'll update the topic I've linked to in my previous post.
Right now I have successfully setup a ZFS root with Sabayon, but I have a few issues mounting a separate dataset for the tmp directories, I am trying to figure out what could be the problem.
