HP Officejet 4500 (Not printing/scanning) [Solved]

Postby SabayonHead » Wed Oct 24, 2012 13:45

I'm currently running Sabayon ( with Mate )

The printer I have is one of those All-In-One's.

When I installed, everything was detected. Sabayon detected the driver, the printer showed in the list and I left selected that which was (Recommended)

All seemed well. Until I actually went to print. The printer shows in the settings so the OS knows its there but it's not communicating with the printer itself for some reason.

So now I'm confused on what step to take next ( when it seems the driver and setup went through )

As for the other part of the printer, the scanner, I installed Simple Scan to use it.

i had used Simple Scan under another OS and it worked beautifully with no problems, so I thought to use it again under Sabayon/Mate...but a problem occurs and says the scanner isn't even detected.

So now I'm twiddling my thumbs, wondering what to do next

If there's anything i left out, let me know.

Thanks...

When you write "driver", what did you install? You would need to install the package net-print/hplip and use the CUPS browser interface http://localhost:631/ to add the printer and configure it for CUPS. Is that what you did?

It said "Searching for drivers"

After it shows a list of printers and mine was there, left that selected.

Then on the following page it showed 2 columns with a list of drivers, i left it selected with the recommended ones. What the names were I can't remember exactly.

But i'll look into what you just wrote and see what happens.

Would that also apply for the scanner as well?

I'll post back soon...thanks :)

***Update/SOLVED***

Ok, I went to RIGO and searched for "hplip" and found it, selected and installed.

It installed everything that was needed. I should note for anyone else that comes across this problem, "Delete the old printer that might have been setup before doing this to avoid confusion"

Once I installed the software, I deleted the old one ( as it was still thinking to use it, so it wasn't printing until I did ) then selected the new one, made it default and now all is working :D

So is the scanner :D

But!... It installs XSane software, Xsane for me personally is a little funky looking for scanning. So my suggestion is to use Simple Scan instead ( leave XSane just in case )

That's about it. So all is working now.

ln A Nutshell

Goto Rigo
Search for hplip
Install it
Default the new printer in your settings and remove the old one that is there ( if it is there )
And use Xsane for scanning if you choose to or download Simple Scan.

And thank Fitz for helping :D

Thanks Fitz, much appreciated!!!
