Slow response in 64 bit installation [Solved]

Postby axizhe » Thu Oct 18, 2012 23:23

Hi everyone!.
After testing the distro for about a week i was happy enough to make my main distro (Actually i formatted my hd and make a fresh new install of Sabayon X, as the only OS in my computer).
Thing is, games are really slow, Mupen64 runs fine the first two minutes then FPS got really low, (10 to 15 max), and the games i try to play via Wine are unplayable, only tryed StartCraft and WoW so far, but they are really slow...
I installed Sabayon 10 (64 bit, GNOME 3), my computer is a Dell Inspiron R14 (Not the best machine to play, i know), with a Core i3 (Intel Integrated Graphics), with 3GB of ram..
I tested these games in other linux distros (Some of them really older) and i can play them just fine, but never tryed it in a 64bit linux.. Could this be the reason? i need to upgrade something?..

Thanks.

pd: Sorry about my english, its not my mother language.-

Hi axizhe, welcome to Sabayon Linux.

Intel graphics should work just fine on Sabayon, could you post the output of these commands?
Code: Select all
glxinfo | grep vendor
glxinfo | grep render
lsmod

I highly doubt this is related to the 64 bit install.

Thanks for the quick answer!

Here's the output:

Code: Select all
sergio@Galadriel ~ $ glxinfo | grep vendor
server glx vendor string: SGI
client glx vendor string: Mesa Project and SGI
OpenGL vendor string: Intel Open Source Technology Center

sergio@Galadriel ~ $ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Ironlake Mobile
    GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_ARB_ES2_compatibility, GL_ARB_debug_output,

Code: Select all
sergio@Galadriel ~ $ lsmod

Please, use code tags for large output, it makes it easier to read, you can notice a button labelled "Code" when you write your message, just push it and paste the command output or any text between the tags. I've modified your message accordingly.

Your setup looks fine, the only thing I can think of is that you don't seem to be using kernel mode setting, what does this command output?
(as root)
Code: Select all
grep drm /var/log/messages

Also, just in case, could you post your:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
There might be some useful options that could be added on Intel cards.

Re: Slow response in 64 bit installation

Postby micia » Fri Oct 19, 2012 0:25

Oh, so apparently I was wrong, KMS is working nicely.
You could try some options to optimize your xorg.conf, first of all by enabling SNA, then I'll list some other options, you might check them out or not, depending on what you think is better:

* be sure to backup your xorg.conf:
Code: Select all
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf ~/xorg.conf.backup

it will copy xorg.conf in the user's home directory.

* Enable SNA, it is the latest acceleration method by Intel, it is fast but it is considered (at least last time I set up an intel card it was) experimental, but it is currently pretty solid, in my experience it worked well, if something goes wrong, your xorg.conf backup is there. :)
To enable it, edit your Device section like this:
Code: Select all
Section "Device"

    Identifier  "SabayonVga0"
    Driver      "intel"
    #BusID    "PCI:00:02"
    #Option "RenderAccel" "on"
    #Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
    #Option "BusType" "PCI"
    #Option "ColorTiling" "on"
    #Option "EnablePageFlip" "on"
    # UseEvents is causing segmentation faults with
    # NVIDIA 6xxx, 7xxx and >=275.xx.xx drivers
    #Option "UseEvents" "True"
    Option "LogoPath" "/usr/share/backgrounds/sabayonlinux-nvidia.png"

    Option "AccelMethod"  "sna"
EndSection

Basically adding the Option "AccelMethod" "sna" line to the section.

* Intel has vertical sync enabled by default, this typically slows down games a bit (even if it improves image quality), you can disable it adding to the device section a line like this:
Code: Select all
Option "SwapbuffersWait" "false"

I suggest you to try SNA method first, if it is still slow, then try to disable vertical sync.
If SNA works well, you might want to:

* Enable the tear free option, you can do this by adding to the device section a line like this:
Code: Select all
Option "TearFree" "true"

This only works with the SNA method and should improve very much video playback quality (especially if you play them using VAAPI with libva-intel-driver) and the desktop environment composite effects quality.

A X server restart (or reboot) is required to make xorg.conf changes effective. Be careful while editing that file, a mistake or a syntax error usually leads Xorg to halt the startup, leaving you with a text console (or in the worst case a black screen), that's where you press ctrl+alt+F1, copy the xorg.conf backup to its place and issue:
(as root)
Code: Select all
shutdown -r now

Re: Slow response in 64 bit installation

Postby axizhe » Fri Oct 19, 2012 1:06

Well:

I first tryed the Option "AccelMethod" "sna", games became faster, WoW is playable now, not as fast as Puppy linux with wine 1.3 but, fast enough to be playable (I will check wine cfg now), also StartCraft is playable too, as it should be!
Then i added the TearFree option, and back to the slow response, XMBC even crashes when i use it, and if it dosnt crash takes a life to close it..
So im staying with AccelMethod sna for now.

Thank you for your help!.

PD: I read over the internet something about enabling tearfree to gnome 3 and cinammon in some config file, maeby after i try that the tearfree option becomes usefull!

Thanks again.-

It is to be expected for the tear free option to slow things down a lot, it shouldn't make anything crash but... well, it happens apparently, I was more lucky.
It should improve graphics by removing nasty artifacts, but it has a high cost.

Were you using GNOME3 on Puppy Linux? Because GNOME Shell is quite some graphics resources hog.

Oh no, in puppy i used Trinity!... Now that i think about it, i cannot compare this two, that could be the reason i played so well in puppy..
Ok. I think i can add Solved to this post, right?..
Thanks again.

Re: Slow response in 64 bit installation [Solved]

If you think your issue is now solved, then yes, please mark the topic as such as you have done already.

If you wish to experiment with how your system would run without the Shell, then you might start a tiny fluxbox session (I think it is installed by default) from GDM, instead of logging in to your regular session, then run your games from a console, even xterm would do (this to prevent any GNOME3 native application to bring in a ton of services possibly faking out the results). That should give you an idea of how much the Shell might influence the performance.
If you think that it is too much, there could be some way to make it more slim, even if unfortunately I can't think of any, since I never looked into it.
