Ta for your reply. It did not work, when I hovered the mouse only an arrow appeared, nothing happened when I clicked.

You must have your widgets locked, then. In which case, the procedure is:

Option 1
1. Click on 'Desktop Icons' in the top right corner of your Desktop.
2. Click on 'Unlock Widgets' in the drop-down menu.
3. Hover your mouse over the waste bin icon.
4. A tab with icons will slide out from the side of the Plasma widget.
5. Click on the X to remove it from your Desktop.
6. Click on 'Desktop Icons' in the top right corner of your Desktop.
7. Click on 'Lock Widgets'.

Option 2
1. Click on 'Desktop Icons' in the top right corner of your Desktop.
2. Click on 'Unlock Widgets' in the drop-down menu.
3. Hover your mouse over the waste bin icon.
4. A tab with icons will slide out from the side of the Plasma widget. Ignore it.
5. Right-click on the icon and select 'Remove this Wastebin'.
6. Click on 'Desktop Icons' in the top right corner of your Desktop.
7. Click on 'Lock Widgets'.

If you wanted to remove a waste bin Plasma widget from the Panel instead of the Desktop, the procedure would be:
1. Click on 'Desktop Icons' in the top right corner of your Desktop.
2. Click on 'Unlock Widgets' in the drop-down menu.
3. Hover your mouse over the waste bin icon.
4. Right-click on the icon and select 'Remove this Wastebin'.
5. Click on 'Desktop Icons' in the top right corner of your Desktop.
6. Click on 'Lock Widgets'.

That's strange, Fitzcarraldo's instructions should work perfectly, which desktop mode are you using? You should be able to see it in the Desktop settings window, by right clicking over your desktop and selecting Desktop settings.

KDE4 has a variety of ways to manage your desktop, like folder view, desktop grid, newspaper and many others. Though, all of them should offer the possibility to remove widgets or desktop icons when you unlock desktop objects.

Hi, yes it seems weird. When I right click I do not get an option for desktop setting, I can get into folder view but cant remove it from there. Is there another way. Many thanks

It's more than 'weird'. It is even possible to delete a Plasmoid that you have added to the Desktop when using the LiveDVD, so something is completely wrong with your installation if you cannot remove a Plasmoid from the Desktop. Have you tried adding another Plasmoid to your Desktop (choose any other Plamoid, or even another instance of the Trashcan) and then tried to remove it? If you find you can't remove that, I'd be inclined to delete ~/.kde4/ and reboot (KDE will recreate a fresh ~/.kde4/ if you delete it).

EDIT: If you feel uncomfortable just deleting ~/.kde4 then make a backup first:

Code: Select all
$ cp -rp ~/.kde4 ~/.kde4bak

Then, after you reboot and recreate your Panel and populate it and your Desktop with instances of the Plasmoids (widgets) you like, you can delete the backup:

Code: Select all
$ rm -rf ~/.kde4bak

Hi, Installation went well and the machine funtions as normal, I can add plasmoids to the desk top and remove them easily, I added another instance of trash can then unlocked widgets and deleted it in the normal manner, The problem trash icon will not give an option to delete. Very odd
