LiveCD worked fine, installed OS has graphics issues

Postby jcoles » Sat Aug 04, 2012 12:27

Although the LiveCD worked well, the installed system has severe graphics issues. It started with some display corruption and a few reboots later it failed completely. Didn't try to reconfigure it. There are no obvious tools to grapple with video settings,a anyway. I just put up with the problem while doing updates and adding some apps I like. Silly me, thinking updates would solve the problem.

I can see no way to select a safer video mode at startup. Graphics fail even with the "recovery mode" boot. From the command line I can run startx. The result is three undecorated immovable terminal windows. What do you bet some developer will try to tell me that's not a malfunction ;-).

Now, I know this sort of issue can lead to all sorts of lengthy instructions on changing drivers, adding/removing kernel modules, manually editing xorg.conf and so on. But clearly, Sabayon DOES know how to work my video card because the LiveCD did so just fine. How can I get the video configuration from the LiveCD and use that? Fancy stuff like 3D I could struggle with later.

LiveCD is only useful if it looks and works the same as the installed OS. The only difference should be speed. Sabayon looked promising. Graphic display needs to just work straight out of the box.

gonna need more info, hardware, xorg log file, etc...

We don't use startx, we use xdm.

I have pretty much the same issue. My installed OS doesn't seem to want to work with anything that might untilize the graphics card. No Compiz and No Cairo-Dock with OpenGL. :| I've tired installing all the ATI Drivers and Nvidia Drivers and still no avail. :? How do I enable them or any idea how to fix my problem?
