Cannot get VirtualBox installed [Solved]

Postby Johnny Who » Thu Sep 27, 2012 19:34

As the title says, I cannot install virtualbox. I have followed the wiki guide, but haven` t managed to run it neither from cli nor from gui. The packages are installed, according to entropy and portage, but seems like the computer can` t see them...

First of all: Deinstall everything already installed with name 'virtualbox'.
Start from begin... (I assume, you have Sabayon X with Kernel 3.5.0)
You need to install:
- Virtualbox Modules 4.1.20#3.5.0-sabayon~2
- Xf86 Video Virtualbox 4.1.20#3.5.0-sabayon~2
- Virtualbox Guest Additions 4.1.20#3.5.0-sabayon~2
With that, you should have installed VirtualBox (that is the program name, you can start as user in cli)

But you need to do some more things before start it:
VirtualBox needs modules, started with:
modprobe vboxdrv
modprobe vboxnetflt
modprobe vboxnetadp

And your username must be added to (the new group) vboxusers:
sudo adduser <benutzername> vboxusers

Then you should be able to start VirtualBox...
If you alread know VirtualBox, then you know, that you need to install the guest additions in your virtual machine then.

And .. if installed proper, you will find 'Oracle Virtual Box' in the start menu under systems sub menu.
Hope, I could help you...

Johnny - if you have installed as per the wiki, you have almost certainly installed it properly. I hit the same problem as you. The installer does not create any menu entries. Try in a terminal VirtualBox and it should run - note the capitalisation.

Anyway ... after I installed VirtualBox the way I described before, then (in Kde Menu), when I open the 'System' submenue, I find the entry 'Oracle xVM VirtualBox.
Also, when I start the KDE menu and type virt ... Then I see the entry Oracle xVM VirtualBox also.
I won't exclude that you will recieve the entry AFTER first use of VirtualBox ...

Yes, I have that menu item now. May be it only shows up after a reboot?

PLease read the wiki page carefully, as everything is explained.
including the question marks....
if necessary, repeat the steps.

Really, I solved the problem without reading your posts. I just needed to pull in the appropriate kernel modules, then log out and log out again. I also added the modules to /etc/conf.d/modules. Then I ran VirtualBox from the terminal and it worked. Now I also have a menu entry, and the whole programme works just great, and much much faster than in Ubuntu...

You can run into programs not showing up in the menu system right away, a log out and log in seems to do the trick tho. Installing VB should of pulled all the needed deps, if not, sounds like a bug.
