How to recompile everuthing....

Postby Johnny Who » Sat Sep 08, 2012 12:55

I would like to recompile all my binary packages installed via Entropy, in order to enhance performance. How do I do this???

I want to do that too, but I've been advised against it so many times, and never gotten to actually doing it, so I'm not really the one to answer, but..
If you really want to do this, a good idea might be to start by trying to install Linux From Scratch on another system first to get your feet wet..
Even if you do it in Sabayon, I assume you would have to compile and build stuff manually, and generally you want to do this in steps, like:
-install compilers and devel packages
-compile kernel, compilers and devel packages
-change so that your new kernels and compilers are used
-recompile everything when you now can compile using only natively compiled binaries

It's a messy business..

learn emerge , and use it instead of entropy.

Emerge always compile stuff for you.

Hallo...
a good start to learn about Portage / Emerge is:
http://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title ... tage_Guide
But I've made the experience, before you emerge any package, that you should install the gcc-compiler package with version 4.3.6 (again) with Entropy or Rigo due to gcc error messages while emerging.

Or I could just follow the emerge world page in the wiki

Note that it only makes sense to recompile everything if you first adjust your make.conf file and your kernel config to suit your hardware, otherwise you are simply rebuilding everything using the configuration chosen on the remote server that was used to build the packages in the first place. If you want to optimise something, you have to optimise it for your own hardware, not somebody else's hardware.

If you want to compile all packages, this is more easy when you use a regular gentoo or funtoo installation.

for making this in Sabayon, is easier to use the "small" Sabayons, as the CoreCDX only with fluxbox, ex.

ftp://sabayon.c3sl.ufpr.br/sabayon/iso/Sabayon_Linux_CoreCDX_10_amd64.iso

as starting point. You should edit your make.conf, plain to use adequate USE Flags etc...

However, for the same graphical env. the performances os Sabayon and Gentoo are proximal, comparable (I remember that Joost has also carried out tests on this).

Example, my Gentoo installation with XFCE is almost efficient as my Sabayon with XFCE, differences are minimal... Any Sabayon with XFCE is faster than any Gentoo with KDE.

I have in mind that KDE is not a good choice for gentoo. It needs hours to be compiled, and you lose the main advantage of the Gentoo, the performance (Gentoo request many time to be installed and configurated, for lose their main advantage, the speed).

I understand your point, albfneto, as the upgrade from KDE 4.9.1 to 4.9.2 on my Core i7 laptop running Gentoo took about 7.5 hours. But, as KDE is built specifically for my hardware and software environment, it does run well and seems to be more stable as a result (I don't experience many of the problems reported in these forums for KDE in SL, for example). Of course KDE does have some bugs, whichever distribution one uses it with, but then which DE is completely bug-free?
