Network Printer not responding after Sabayon X ... [Solved]

Postby TheSupremeVizier » Sun Sep 23, 2012 23:30

Installed using Sabayon_Linux_10_amd64_K.iso. Have also kept up-to-date with Rigo.

The printer is an HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni. My first attempt to print from the Sabayon X system successfully printed a color image. All subsequent attempts to print text-only and/or image files have failed. CUPS reports that "The printer is not responding." The printer is still accessible and working from an older Sabayon Linux system on the same network.

I have tried to use two different printer definitions (drivers?) on the Sabayon X system:
HP Color LaserJet cp1518ni pcl3, hpcups 3.12.6
HP Color LaserJet cp1518ni hpijs pcl3, 3.12.6

I am using the following printer definition (driver) on an older Sabayon install on the same network, and it is still printing properly:
HP Color LaserJet cp1518ni hpijs pcl3, 3.11.1.19

Am I doing something wrong? Any advice that helps to solve this problem would be most appreciated. Also, the HP site claims that the current version of the HPLIP solution is version 3.12.9. Am I experiencing an incompatibility between CUPS and Sabayon X?

Thanks very much.

Are you setting up the printer using the CUPS browser interface http://localhost:631 ? Are the two PPDs that you referred to the only ones listed? If there is a Postscript PPD then try that. I don't have your particular model, but I use a lot of different HP networked laser printers at work, and I find that I need to use the Postscript PPDs rather than the PCL PPDs to get them to print properly.

Yes, I have been using only the CUPS browser interface http://localhost:631. The only PPDs listed for the HP Color LaserJet cp1518ni are "HP Color LaserJet cp1518ni pcl3, hpcups 3.12.6" and "HP Color LaserJet cp1518ni hpijs pcl3, 3.12.6". There is no postscript PPD for this specific model. Are you suggesting that perhaps I should try, say, the PPD for "HP Color LaserJet CP1510 Series Postscript (en, da, de, es, ..., zh_TW)"?

Let's say that we get this figured out. If so, is there an easy way to remove printers from CUPS?

Thanks again, very much.

If that is the closest Postscript PPD to your model, then "yes".

Very easy. Select the printer in the CUPS browser interface, click on Administration and select Delete. But you don't need to delete the printer; select Modify and just select the different PPD when you get to the appropriate page.

EDIT: BTW, just in case it's interfering, try turning off the firewall on your PC:

Code: Select all
$ su
Password:
# ufw disable
# exit
$

I performed the Sabayon X install while specifying an inactive firewall. Based on your recommendation, I have verified that ufw status was inactive.

CUPS provides three Postscript PPDs for HP Color LaserJet 1510 Series, and they are all listed identically within the CUPS UI. I modified the printer to use each PPD listed starting with the top of the three. I tested with one PPD, and when that failed, I tested with the next PPD and so on. They all failed.

I was also provided with multiple descriptions when performing "Add Printer" and looking at "Discovered Network Printers". I could choose between:
HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni (2DFFDD) (HP HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni)
HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni (2DFFDD) (HP HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni)
HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni (HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni)
It might be worth noting that "2DFFDD" composes part of the MAC address of the printer. In any event, trying all five available PPDs (the three above plus the two non-postscript described earlier) with the above three "Discovered Network Printers" (even though there's only one network printer), I finally found a combination that worked:
"HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni (HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni)" with the bottom of the three postscript PPDs.

I've tested the printer multiple times now and it's working properly. Thanks very much for all your help. I will mark this thread Solved now.
