Strange problem with radeon HD2600 [Solved]

Postby vfafou » Sun Sep 23, 2012 18:00

Hello!
I face a problem that will drive me crazy...
All my PCs have Sabayon 10 KDE installed, except one that I changed it today. The problem is that the "newcomer" PC has an Ati Radeon HD2600. The graphics adapter recognized normally from Sabayon, KDE starts but I see black screen. If I choose recovery mode, it starts normally, without problems.
In normal kernel mode i tried the following: I set KDE to auto-login. I see black screen again when KDE starts, but I hear the starting sound of KDE (logged in but still black screen). I press power off button of my PC and enter (choose to log out), and KDE logs out, bringing me the login screen. I give my user and pass, and KDE starts normally, with no problem! I've searching all day for a solution but nothing works!

Any help is highly appreciated!

The problem is that the FOSS driver causes a conflict with the framebuffer. The graphics detection script caused you to use this driver because the current fglrx driver won't work with your card.
You could try removing the splash from the boot line in grub.

e.g. remove this:
Code: Select all
splash=silent,theme:sabayon video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr:3 vga=791

Or once booted press alt+ctrl+F1 become root and do:
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/xdm restart

We are working on this problem, an alternative fglrx driver will be available soon for ati cards <5xxx
A beta driver is currently in testing repo: x11-drivers/ati-drivers-12.6_beta_pre897

If you decide to use the beta driver, remove the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and reboot.

Thank you very much Joost!
I'm very happy using Sabayon because I'm sure for the rapid problem solving!
I'll try your suggestions in the morning, and I'll give you a feedback!

The perm fix for this will follow when the Linux 3.6 kernel arrives.
That kernel will have KMS build in: CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y

Apparently that resolves all issues. Sadly it on the other hands breaks with FGLRX.
So instead of instructing the kernel to load KMS module to be able to use the FOSS driver, in the future you will have to instruct the kernel to NOT do that if you want to use FGLRX. That is the change that is going to be made.

Until that, you can use the workarounds like above:

- Keep using FGLRX for the <5xxx card, use the beta driver. This is a short term solution, but it might be OK for you.
- Keep using the FOSS driver, for kernels < 3.6 you will need to remove the boot splash, or restart xdm.

Hello again, Joost!
I finally got it work after many hours of experimenting!
I was too late because I hadn't had the time to try it concurrently!
Thank you for your right suggestions!
