I can't login - Ya I know, it sounds stupid [Solved]

Postby deniro0311 » Thu Sep 20, 2012 5:54

I just got a new laptop and finally decided to give Sabayon a try. I have tried with both XFCE/64 and MATE/64, but I can't login. I enter the User: and Password: and it just takes me back to User:

I know I am really rusty with Linux, but this is crazy. I did a standard install and the DVD I burned is good to go. Any help is much appreciated.

you can't login on the live session or is this an installed version?

More information you can provide will help

Assumption is that you are trying to login from the graphical login manager
First thing I would do is check to make sure the scroll lock button is off (not seen this happen since the beta 4 and 5)
Next I would try the user name and password while the caps lock button is active
If still no login then see if you can login from the tty command line

To do this (if you don't know how) when your computer has loaded to the graphical login
Using your keyboard press and hold the Ctrl and Alt keys at the same time
then while holding those 2 keys press the F1 key once (then release the other keys)

That will take you to the command line on tty1
Now try and login as your normal user
If you still can not login
Try and login as your root user

If you still can not login using root or user then check to make sure that when you press a key on your keyboard that the character(s) you typed is displayed on the screen as they should be, for example if you press the numbers 4, 6, 8 or 2 on the number pad of keyboard then you should see those numbers appear on tour display

If they do not then your scroll button must be in the on position
(if it is on you can switch it off by using the (fn key) on your keyboard, press and hold the fn key then press the scroll lock key once then release the fn key)

If none of the above helps then you are either typing the wrong password(s) because the scroll lock or caps lock buttons were on when you typed in your passwords during the install process or you have another problem that you may find by searching the sabayon forum

If you have used the incorrect password, change the passwords by using chroot while in a live session with the livedvd
Hope this helps

Wow, fast response and very in depth. I am like this community already, thanks. I will jump on the suggestions and report back asap.

And yes, this is happening on an installed version from the graphical login.

I tired it all and it is still a no go for the user I created during the install. However, I can login via the command line on tty1 and the graphical login with root. So that is my bad for not testing root. Now I will see if that user was even created during the install.

I decided to give it another shot, but this time with a fresh install. I also went back to XFCE, as I really didn't care for MATE. This time I added some numbers to the username during the install process and now I can login. I have never had to add numbers before to a username in any distro, so I wasn't expecting that to be the issue.

It is not a requirement to add numbers to a user name in this distribution either.

Well then that is super strange. Nothing worked until I used a username with numbers. Part of me wants to troubleshoot this some more, but I will just settle for the fact it is working.
