Using only portage to magane sabayon

I would like to olny use portage to manage my package.
Is there any specific thing I have to care about before doing this and is there any risk to break my system by updating all package ?

I read the "Complete portage guide", any other article you can advise me ?

you'll want to check into the config files and USE usages as you'll want to build it more for your needs and hardware

Why do you want to use only Portage rather than Entropy?

Listen, consider yourself warned that doing this will without fail, break your sabayon install until you figure out how to properly update, use your brain and understand at least some of gentoo. 1) I'v been using linux for 3 months now just a fyi, so if im wrong my bad. 2) I'm assuming you know about dep's so the first thing you need to learn is actually 3 things. A) Do not ever under any circumstances use entrophy. B) if you download the new firefox from a not so very fresh install, its going to grab a new kernel, and if it doesnt something else will, so be prepared. C) after the kernel is updated and built you must (in my experience) run an emerge --update. I highly discourage using world, as it either will not work, or youll need to learn USE flags and seting up rc settings. I personally don't like using a gui other then for a few things, and even then most of what i do is in a shell terminal. Anyway the reason i do this as im sure ill be asked is because as i can build a stage 3 gentoo tarball atm, im stuck getting xorg and xwindows setup. Sabayon is great, its a quick install if it breaks, and lets me download source and save a ton of data ( i have a limit per month kinda ) and with 16g ram and a second gen i5 / gtx 480 compiles dont take long at all. I will also say that i have never used entrophy, only emerge. If you take this route i would suggest a few things: backup all your media on a external hdd. be prepared to break xorg, and or manually boot from grub ( you should become comfortable enough that you can do either fix without looking anything up ) when all else fails, especially when using win xp, another linux install and sabayon, when grub breaks and you cant get it setup again, re-install sabayon over the old and your grub bootmenu will be fixed. If your not patient i would look to entrophy. willing to break things and learn in a hurry? use emerge and learn to keep it stable. Please note im not in any way bashing sabayon, i think its a great distro and i use it all the time, even working on building gentoo systems sabayon is my distro that 'just works' and is very similar, in fact can be made "basicly" gentoo simply by moding your config files and manually setting use flags etc, at least i believe you can. Just my thoughts on this so like i said if im wrong i'v been using linux for about 3 months, and I'v tryed most every major distro, Sabayon/Gentoo are at the top, I use slackware as a backup install sometimes but i dont wish to learn its update variables since im still not completely on top of apt-get and emerge (I use backtrack as well.. suprisingly i use it more because its much more stable, easier to customize as it loads a command prompt by default, other then that i dont use the tools yet ). one last thing i can think of off the top of my head, is using man pages. Also a bash programing / scripting book would be a good idea in my opinion. anyhow cheers, have fun.
