Paths to installation packages for CoreCDX install? [Solved]

Postby handy » Tue Sep 18, 2012 11:29

Hi, I'm in the early stages of setting up a CoreCDX install. I've installed & partitioned how I want, am running Openbox, & as of this edit, I have installed Tint2 (not set up yet), Leafpad, PCManFM (though I really want to be using Worker?), Sakura, ROXterm, Firefox & all the add-ons I use with it.

I've used following linked gentoo page:

http://packages.gentoo.org/categories/

which is certainly of some help in finding out what the path would be to install the files using equo , but I haven't been completely successful.

What I need to know to get me so I can do a lot more without asking questions is the paths to call so I can install these packages:

Worker.
& the icons needed so Rigo will start (which should be a BIG help in this early stage).

Also, if there are ways to search out packages on the command line & elsewhere, when you don't know the path they are stored in & sometimes exactly what they may be called, that would be superb too.

Thank you. :)

Hi handy, we "know" each other from the Arch and Archbang forums.

I started my Sabayon experience with the CoreCDX install and liked Sabayon so much, I re-did it as a full install. I know you want to keep your system very lightweight, though.

I think it would really be best if you learn the Sabayon way of installing packages: "equo update", then "equo install <whatever>". Rigo is essentially a GUI front-end to Entropy (the name of the package manager that is invoked by command equo). https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?title=En:Entropy

On the rare occasion that I need a package from Gentoo, I use the Gentoo package manager, but let's not get into all that now. I have not tried installing Gentoo packages manually, the way you are asking.

I hope this helps.

Hi ratcheer, nice to see you here. ;)

The only reason I was using that gentoo wiki page was in an effort to find out what path to give equo so I could/can get hold of the packages that I need to install, (I MUST have Worker) to get my new system to a comfortable & useful state. After which I'll just keep learning & improving it.

It's my intention to build it like I had it on the Arch base, package wise, but with gentoo underneath, made so much easier by the work of the wonderful Sabayon team. :)

I just need to know how to find packages, & I need to get Rigo working on Openbox, which at this point looks like Rigo needs a gtk* based icon pack. I don't know how to find out just exactly what the dependencies are.

I've been studying the Sabayon wiki, & looking in the forum over the last couple of days. I used the wiki to help me with equo, & that's all fine, I have another machine to refer to when I need help with the commands or command sequence.

Sometime in the near future I'll make aliases in .bashrc to make it all easier (same as in Arch :) ).

I got this page to search for me & it gave me more clues for paths & equo :

http://packages.gentoo.org/arch/amd64

I just installed worker-2.18.1 it is the superseded version, but it is certainly good enough for me. :D

[edit:] I just found this page:

https://wiki.sabayon.org/index.php?titl ... _Functions

Which may give the understanding I require re. dependencies.

There may be a lot of useful info on this page: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/openbox.xml But be careful, it is the Gentoo way of doing things, not Sabayon's.

I'm wondering whether I should look through the Gentoo Handbook to get the info that I need to properly set up my CoreCDX system?

There really isn't much in the way of specific documentation for the job (that I've found anyway) in the Sabayon wiki.

With Arch you've got the brilliant Beginners' Guide, which guides you through, branching where need be due to the different types of network connection, GPU's, desktops & whatever other variations need to be covered.

It is understandable that Sabayon doesn't have such a guide as most of its users go for the ready spun install, which is only really possible with an Arch base if you use ArchBang & the like (as you know).

I think that there would be quite a growth in Sabayon users if there was a Beginners' Guide type document for using the CoreCDX install. As there exists an ever growing number of people that like to build there own system in such an environment as a step by step guide provides. On top of this, the Sabayon community & administration is far friendlier in the forums than those in the Arch forum community. That in itself is attractive & refreshing after 4.5 years of the other. :)

I'll look further into this, unfortunately I don't think I have the smarts & Linux experience to pull off the writing of such a guide.

Is there a way on the command line to discover a packages dependencies?

If I have this information I should be pretty well set.

Interesting... no one is interested in helping me, I surely must be displaying a lot of ignorance.

Oh, well. I had to get around the problems by installing Xfce4, it bought in the previously missing dependencies & now all packages work properly. I can go with Xfce or Openbox, they are both pretty much set up how I want them, although I have a problem shared with at least one other, that VLC doesn't want to play vids though Totem does?

Now I can go through & change my main machine over to Sabayon Openbox.

Thanks for your reply wolfden.

I'll check out your input re. dependencies, & I am grateful for it.

As far as vlc is concerned I've discovered that it is purely to do with the dvd drive, so it isn't vlc's fault its device driven. I'm sure when I look further into that I'll discover an obvious reason.
