Xorg Errors

Postby clausinx » Mon Sep 03, 2012 0:34

Hey guys, this problem has been getting on my nerves, If you want some info, I'll get you info. So I've been trying to find a linux distro to take over my laptop's Windows 7. My laptop is a HP Pavilion G6. I've known there has been a lot of errors associated with this laptop when it comes to linux. I wanted to try Sabayon out because Gentoo has always been my favorite. I have downloaded and set it to boot from USB. Anyways, I can almost never get X to start up correctly. I boot up with "sabayon nomodeset" since a simple "sabayon" will return absolutely no input to my screen, it'll simply just black out. With nomodeset I can do some stuff on the shell. When I type in startx it returns "(EE) No devices detected" "No screens found" "Serverauth.9984 does not exist". So basically I tell myself great, another thing I can't use from fresh. But I didn't stop there. A while later I grabbed my external monitor and hooked it up. For the boot param, I just used "sabayon". After the system loaded up, both my laptop screen and external monitor worked. I chose to use MATE. After selecting from the list my external monitor blacked out and my laptop monitor stayed on perfectly. The best visuals I have ever seen on the laptop. So I am confused on how do I get my X server running properly.

I recall reading about backlight problems with HP Pavilion notebooks and Linux, so perhaps that's your problem. If you have installed SL to your hard disk, try editing /boot/grub/grub.cfg and adding the following two parameters to the kernel boot line, then reboot and use the keyboard's brightness keys to try and raise the brightness:

Code: Select all
acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor
