Grub "file not found" kernel issues ? [Solved]

Postby notzippy » Thu Sep 13, 2012 16:49

Hi

I am sabayon weekly repository and got a notification that there was a new kernel update 3.5.0 rc7 available, among other things, rigo installed it ok but when I rebooted I got 3 file not found errors when grub loaded. And then kernel 3.5.0 was not one of the options to boot from - just sabayon linux (no kernel version). When I choose "sabayon linux" option I got three more file not founds then an error saying unable to mount ram disk and press any key to continue (which did nothing). So I rebooted (got same errors) and choose advanced options. Then I could see the 3.5.0 kernel I choose that option and I got the same message about the ramdisk but when I pressed a key it continued to load the kernel, and sabayon. Is there a way to repair or reinitialize grub ?

thanks

Have you tried to search the forums before asking?
The issue has been discussed before in several places, for example here: Errors After Upgrade & Kernel Switch ZFS Grub Udev [Solved]

Reinstalling grub and updating grub.cfg should solve your issue:
Code: Select all
grub2-install /dev/sdX   #replace sdX by the partition where your grub is located
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Dude, I do check the forums for information, however on all of the responses there is no explanation as to why the kernel update corrupted grub, and rather then blindly following the crowd and potentially making things worse I asked the question in order to educate myself.

SO I did reinstall grub (and reran the config) and I see one file not found error as grub boots but choosing sabayon linux option now actually boots up the OS.
