Sabayon behavior on e-450 / e2-1800 APU's [Solved]

Postby sedo_5 » Tue Aug 28, 2012 22:31

Hi everybody!

I'm struggling to decide which netbook to buy.
I'd like to buy an e-450 /e2-1800 model, for example Asus 1225B or Sony Vaio E11 series, but I've read throughtout the internet that there are big troubles with video drivers....
I will mainly use it for working, so no gaming and no video stuff (and I'm not so interested in desktop effects either), anyway I still can't figure out what are the real problems that I could actually encounter. I don't know if Sabayon (with its bleeding-edge packages and kernels) could give a good boost in stability on these machines.
Do you think that the compatibility of these machines is decent enough to be used with Linux (and Sabayon in particular) ? or, based on your experiences, it'd be far better to pick some other machine?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Renzo

Well, I'm a APU user myself (A8-3870K), and have tried both Ubuntu and Suse, and neither gives me video driver problems. The audio output was sort of messed up with Suse at first, but that was fixed after running alsaconf I think.
I didn't try using the HDMI or VGA, just DVI. And I don't always go with the newest driver either. In Windows I use the 12.6 driver. Anwyay, hope this helps. I usually google stuff as I'm certain you do as well.

Hi and thank you for your reply.
His post is quite old and eventually I have bought my netbook (the one described above).
I have to say that performances surprised me, as everything is going fine. Although I'very tried different distros on this machine, I can confirm that Sabayon gives the best performances in terms of temperature and fluidity, both with fglrx and radeon-open.

No problems so far.
I hope this post could be useful for others.

Yeah, I just put Sabayon on my wife's netbook. I didn't know that the Atom was a 64-bit CPU. Either way, it moves so much faster than Windows 7 Starter. So, Win7 neither takes full advantage of the CPU, or the RAM. It moves acceptably fast on when using emerge as well.
