fallback to ttyl1 on broken configs

Postby Nilssab » Sat Sep 08, 2012 16:39

Hello,

I've had many problems with kernel updates and crashes during upgrades that have caused startx to fail and after the boot up I end up with a black screen with a blinking cursor. The first to times I got really intimidated by this and didn't realize I could fix it, so I ended up re-installing a few times when I first tried Sabayon 7..

But after a knowing about Ctrl+Alt+F1, logging in, doing deptest, libtest etc. I got really hooked on the robustness of Sabayon, I know that if all fails I can just fix it from a ttyl.

But, I think many ppl will get really intimidated like me, so I wonder if it would be possible to add a check after startx in some way?
That would check if it failed, and if it failed, automatically fallback to ttyl1 after say 10 seconds. (Maybe stating something like: "Startx failed, Error: blablabla Falling back to ttyl in 10.. 9.. 8..")
or is it impossible to output text or do automatic change to ttyl1 from the "regular" screen, whatever it's called?
