win7 + ubuntu + sabayon [Solved]

Postby arymanus » Fri Aug 31, 2012 20:21

Hi all,

Sometimes ago I tried to use Sabayon linux but I encountered some problems with graphic drivers and finally I used Ubuntu instead. Now I'm planning second approach to the Sabayon and I'd like to ask for your help.

I'd like to install Sabayon next to my present operation systems (win7 - games and ubuntu 12.04 - some university and programming stuff). Is it possible to proceed safe installation, after which I'll have option to choose between Ubuntu, Sabayon and Win7 during the booting process?

I'll be very thankful for all advices,
best regards

As long as you have space it should be no problem but you would probably need to shrink the windows partition to give room. As you already have a dual boot system you will know about shrinking the windows partition and it should be relatively straight forward. The important point, apart from backing up your work, is to choose custom partitioning during the install and set one or two partitions for Sabayon. The installation should give a grub boot screen that will allow you to choose between the three systems when you boot up.
Running the live DVD before the installation should show if there is going to be a graphics problem.
Best of luck - I hope you can join us. :)

Dunsurfin thanks for your reply :).

Are you sure that installation will give a grub option that will allow me to choose between three systems? I know that this work when I add Sabayon or Ubuntu to the win7 but I have never tried to add linux when windows and other linux is already installed.

And one more question: what the size of partition for Sabayon should be in your opinion? Will 20 GB for / enough?

I have successfully installed Sabayon on a system with windows (Vista - not 7), and one or two other Linux distros. Sometimes there has been an OS missing in legacy grub but I have not known it in grub 2. Of course I can't guarantee success but there should be no major problems.
20gb should be enough for your / partition but there could be problems if you plan to share /home with Sabayon and Ubuntu. I've never used a shared /home partition but I am aware that some people have encountered problems.

I don't plan to share /home so there should be no problem. Okey, so I'll try it. I'm starting download and tomorrow I will begin installation. Thanks again for your reply. I'll write about my effects.

Hi,
I'd like to inform that I have successfully installed Sabayon and still got option to choose other systems when I boot up!

Now this all update are downloading... Looks I've got plenty of time to do something else :).
I hope that the next updates will be faster ;)
