Installing skychart from source

Postby Johnny Who » Mon Aug 27, 2012 12:08

I haven `t managed to find the following application neither from entropy nor from portage:
http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/start
However, I did manage to find the tarball containing the sources:
http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/download
However, when I extracted the archive an tried to run make, I noticed that the makefile included was inappropriate. Any ideas on how to install it from source? Is there probably a Gentoo overlay featuring this app? Thanks in advance.

There is an ebuild for SkyChart (pre-compiled binary) -- see Gentoo Bugzilla Bug Report No. 346699. You could install SkyChart via a Portage local overlay or, if you don't know how to use Portage local overlays, you could file a request for an Entropy package to be created and added to the Entropy repository (see the link 'Bugs' at the top of this page).

There's also an ebuild in the yporti overlay
Code: Select all
eix skychart
* sci-astronomy/skychart-bin [1]
     Available versions:  3.6.2150^s {{xplanet}}
     Homepage:            http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/
     Description:         Free software to draw sky charts

[1] "yporti" layman/yporti

so you can try to install it with emerge after adding the overlay.

You need to have git installed and probably rpm.
Code: Select all
layman -a yporti
emerge -a skychart-bin
equo rescue spmsync --ask

Remember it's better to install the dependencies with entropy.

P.S.: You can search the overlays using gpo.zugaina.org or eix.
Another source for ebuilds is Genntoo Bugzilla as Fitzcarraldo already pointed out.

Johny Who -

I installed Skychart but went at it a different way. I didn't try to compile, too many dependencies and libraries that I couldn't round up. I downloaded the .DEB package, extracted to a temp directory. I copied the files (watch ownership and permissions) to the appropriate directory based on what directory they were in, in the temp directory. You will be copying files to /usr... and /home/username/... there aren't that many files that go on the 'system' side of your installation.

I did this back with Skychart version 3.1-1349 on a laptop with Sabayon 5 or 6 system. I have been keeping the OS up-to-date almost every week and Skychart still works great. If you have the skill to attempt compiling, you should be able to work out the details for installing the pre-compiled version.

Good luck. It's a great program!
