KDE splash screen display issues

Postby msdobrescu » Thu Feb 09, 2012 22:29

Hello,

I have fully updated from the previously 7 K version using the weekly repository.
Now, I see the new look, which I must say I love much more than the previous one.
But during the KDE splash screen are some artefacts I have never seen before, on almost a quarter of screen, in the bottom area. It looks like the image is badly scrambled.
As it happens on the new theme only and I've read there are many new things regarding the display driver and x.org window system, I wonder if there is a bug and some others face this issue.
The video card memory seems OK, regarding some tests applied. It is an nVidia 560Ti.

What do you think?

Regards,
Mike

Then could it be independent of the video driver?
Anyway, I must say that after the update, everything moves much faster than before!
One sole drawback I've seen: the cooler of the video card behaves as in case of Windows, i.e. it spins fast when the monitor is in stand by or off. I guess this is driver's issue. I've read over the Internet it is a common issue to nVidia and Ati (under Windows at least).

Hello,

After the latest updates, KDE 4.8.4 and stuff, the issue came back.

Yes, from the upgrade to 9, with the new look, until today, when I have applied the latest upgrades (with KDE 4.8.4, and nvidia 302 drivers...).

It seems like it uses some wrong resolution bitmap, like 768x1280 (this is just an example, not a precise measurement) instead of 1024x1280 one, and the system tries to compensate that, and reads more than it is present into the memory.

I've had a similar issue with my AMD64 installation KDE updated to SL 9, kernel 3.4(I can't give machine specs at the moment as it's turned off but it's a home made job with a fairly up to date Nvidia card (2 years old). The particular peculiarity I noticed is that the scrambled bottom piece is dependent on what was done before a restart. It even holds graphics information from a live CD session which can be a little disconcerting when looking at adult sites!

Any error messages in /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Does the following command show anything?

Code: Select all
dmesg | grep -i nvidia
